To reach even language users not acquainted to the use of grammars the Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim (Germany) looked for new ways to handle grammatical problems. Instead of confronting users with abstractions frequent difficulties of German grammar are introduced in form of exemplary questions like „Which form should be used or preferred: Anfang dieses Jahre or Anfang diesen Jahres? Looking through the long list of such questions even laymen may find solutions of grammatical problems they might not be able to formulate as such.
Grammars even trying to be as comprehensible as possible hardly avoid using technical terms unknown to novices. To overcome these inconveniencies, the grammatical information system grammis of the Institut für Deutsche Sprache incorporated a glossary specialized on terms used within the system. This glossary - actually named Grammatische Grundbegriffe (elementary terms of grammar) and tied by hyperlinks to technical terms in the core grammar' of grammis - offers short and simple explanations mainly by means of exemplification. The idea is to provide the users with provisional understanding to get along while following the main themes they are interested in. Explicitly, the glossary is not a stand-alone dictionary of grammatical terms, and it should not be regarded as one.
Terminological resources play a central role in the organization and retrieval of scientific texts. Both simple keyword lists and advanced modelings of relationships between terminological concepts can make a most valuable contribution to the analysis, classification, and finding of appropriate digital documents, either on the web or within local repositories. This seems especially true for long-established scientific fields with elusive theoretical and historical branches, where the use of terminology within documents from different origins is often far from being consistent. In this paper, we report on the progress of a linguistically motivated project on the onomasiological re-modeling of the terminological resources for the grammatical information system grammis. We present the design principles and the results of their application. In particular, we focus on new features for the authoring backend and discuss how these innovations help to evaluate existing, loosely structured terminological content, as well as to efficiently deal with automatic term extraction. Furthermore, we introduce a transformation to a future SKOS representation. We conclude with a positioning of our resources with regard to the Knowledge Organization discourse and discuss how a highly complex information environment like grammis benefits from the re-designed terminological KOS.
This article evaluates the terminological component (TC) of the grammis portal on German grammar developed by the Institut für Deutsche Sprache. The TC is included into grammis to facilitate nonlinguists‘ access to the main components of the portal: Grammar in questions and answers, and the Systematic Grammar. The TC thus has the potential to be an extremely useful and important grammis component. We discuss to what extend the TC achieves its goals, and make some suggestions how it could be improved. The most important aspects considered in the evaluation are: (a) TC completeness and consistency, (b) accessibility and usability of definitions and index, (c) integration of the TC with the overall system.
Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre wird am Institut für deutsche Sprache (IDS) in Mannheim erforscht, wie der hochkomplexe Gegenstandsbereich „Grammatik“ unter Ausnutzung digitaler Sprachressourcen und hypertextueller Navigationsstrukturen gleichermaßen wissenschaftlich fundiert und anschaulich vermittelt werden kann. Die grammatischen Online-Informationssysteme des IDS wenden sich nicht allein an Forscher und die interessierte Öffentlichkeit in Deutschland, sondern in gleichem Maße an Germanisten und Deutsch-Lernende in der ganzen Welt. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt die damit verbundenen Hoffnungen und Anspruche. Daran anschließend thematisiert er praktische Einsatzmöglichkeiten und skizziert die funktionale und inhaltliche Weiterentwicklung der digitalen Grammatik-Angebote.
The grammatical information system grammis combines descriptive texts on German grammar with dictionaries of specific word classes and grammatical terminology. In this paper, we describe the first attempts at analyzing user behavior for an online grammar of the German language and the implementation of an analysis and data extraction tool based on Matomo, a web analytics tool. We focus on the analysis of the keywords the users search for, either within grammis or via an external search platform like Google, and the analysis of the interaction between the text components within grammis and the integrated dictionaries. The overall results show that about 50% of the searches are for grammatical terms, and that the users shift from texts to dictionaries, mainly by using the integrated links to the dictionary of terminology within the texts. Based on these findings, we aim to improve grammis by extending its integrated dictionaries.
Im Rahmen einer zur Zeit stattfindenden Umgestaltung der Inhalte und der Benutzeroberfläche des Online-Portals grammis hat sich eine Projektgruppe konstituiert, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, das am IDS vorhandene Terminologiesystem zur Grammatik des Deutschen zu überarbeiten und zu erweitern: Dies betrifft zum einen die Überarbeitung und Erweiterung des Terminologieinventars, aber auch die zugrundeliegende methodische Grundlage und technische Infrastruktur. Zum Verständnis dieses Vorhabens sollen zunächst die vorhandenen Vorarbeiten und Grundlagen vorgestellt werden.
