Less than one percent of words would be affected by gender-inclusive language in German press texts

Research on gender and language is tightly knitted to social debates on gender equality and non-discriminatory language use. Psycholinguistic scholars have made significant contributions in this field. However, corpus-based studies that investigate these matters within the context of language use are still rare. In our study, we address the question of how much textual material would actually have to be changed if non-gender-inclusive texts were rewritten to be gender-inclusive. This quantitative measure is an important empirical insight, as a recurring argument against the use of gender-inclusive German is that it supposedly makes written texts too long and complicated. It is also argued that gender-inclusive language has negative effects on language learners. However, such effects are only likely if gender-inclusive texts are very different from those that are not gender-inclusive. In our corpus-linguistic study, we manually annotated German press texts to identify the parts that would have to be changed. Our results show that, on average, less than 1% of all tokens would be affected by gender-inclusive language. This small proportion calls into question whether gender-inclusive German presents a substantial barrier to understanding and learning the language, particularly when we take into account the potential complexities of interpreting masculine generics.
This paper introduces “Synonyms in Contrast”, a new online dictionary that addresses the complexities and nuances of neologistic (near-) synonyms in the German language. The emergence of new lexical items, often borrowings from English, has contributed to the proliferation of meaning equivalents. These share a large extent of contextual features, causing ambiguity and uncertainty among speakers regarding their appropriate usage. The dictionary, which is part of the new IDS Neo2020+ resource, distinguishes itself by utilising corpus-driven and corpus-based approached and sophisticated lexicographic methods such as word embeddings to provide users with comprehensive, context-sensitive information on semantic similarities and differences between new synonyms. This resource aims to aid in the clear understanding of new terms, their usage, and interrelations by detailing their semantic overlaps, distinctive contexts, and collocational preferences. Through a combination of empirical data and user-specified presentation, the dictionary facilitates better linguistic decisions in both everyday and also more specialised communication. The ultimate goal is to enhance the integration of new lexical variants into the mental lexicon of German speakers by offering a reliable, dynamic, and descriptive platform for exploring and resolving lexical uncertainties with respect to meaning equivalents that have recently emerged.

GraphVar ist ein Korpus aus über 1.600 Abiturarbeiten, die zwischen 1917 und 2018 an einem niedersächsischen Gymnasium geschrieben wurden. Das Hauptinteresse beim Aufbau bestand in der Beschreibung graphematischer Variation und ihrer Entwicklung über die Zeit. Leitend war die Frage, was Schreiberinnen und Schreiber eigentlich tatsächlich machen bzw. gemacht haben – und zwar unbeeinflusst von technischen Hilfsmitteln oder Schluss- und Endredaktion, aber unter vergleichbaren Bedingungen. Das Korpus bietet somit ein Fenster auf den unverfälschten Schreibgebrauch von Abiturientinnen und Abiturienten im Laufe der Zeit. Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt sind 1.618 Arbeiten transkribiert, linguistisch annotiert und über eine ANNIS-Instanz erreichbar (graphvar.unibonn.de, Stand: 8.8.2023). Im Sommer 2022 konnten weitere 1.600 Arbeiten zwischen 1900 und 2021 an einem Gymnasium in Nordrhein-Westfalen digitalisiert werden. Neben schriftlinguistischen Fragestellungen ist das Korpus prinzipiell auch für syntaktische, morphologische und lexikalische Fragestellungen geeignet; auch didaktische Untersuchungen sind möglich, genau wie kulturwissenschaftliche.
