Besides English, Afrikaans is considered “the [Germanic] language which deviates grammatically the farthest from the others” (Harbert 2007: 17). But how exactly do we measure “grammatical deviation”, and how deviant is Afrikaans really if we compare it not just to other standard languages but also to non-standard varieties? The present contribution aims to address those questions combining functional-typological and dialectometric perspectives. We first select data for 28 Germanic varieties showing vastly different speaker numbers, grades of standardisation and amounts of language contact. Based on 48 (micro)typological variables from syntax, morphology and phonology, we perform cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling and present ways of visualizing and interpreting the results. Inter alia, the analyses show a major divide between Continental West Germanic and North Germanic (as might be expected) and they also identify a number of outliers, including English and pidgin and creole languages such as Russenorsk or Rabaul Creole German. Afrikaans appears to cluster with the other West Germanic languages rather than the outliers. Within West Germanic, however, it does indeed emerge as rather deviant and, according to our metric, it is, for example, typologically closer to other high-contact varieties such as Yiddish than it is to Dutch.

Unserdeutsch (Rabaul Creole German) ist nach heutigem Kenntnisstand die einzige deutschbasierte Kreolsprache der Welt. Sie entstand zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts an einer katholischen Missionsstation in der damaligen Kolonie Deutsch-Neuguinea im melanesischen Pazifik. Die Sprache selbst und ihre Entstehungsumstände sind in mehrfacher Hinsicht bemerkenswert. Trotzdem wäre die Chance zur Dokumentation und Erforschung von Unserdeutsch beinahe verpasst worden: Nur noch rund 100 Sprecher, alle in fortgeschrittenem Alter, leben heute verstreut in Ostaustralien und Papua-Neuguinea.
Der hier vorliegende Blickpunkt informiert über die Entstehung, Bedeutung, Forschung und Aktualität der Sprache „Unserdeutsch“ im Pazifik.
In this paper, we discuss to what extent the German-based contact language Unserdeutsch (Rabaul Creole German, cf. Volker 1982) matches the category‘creole language’ from both a socio-historical and structural perspective. As a point of reference, we will use typological criteria that are widely supposed to be typical for creole languages. It is shown that Unserdeutsch fits fairly well into the pattern of an ‘average creole’, as has been suggested by data in the Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Language Structures (Michaelis et al. 2013). This is despite a series of atypical conditions in its development that might lead us to expect a close structural proximity to the lexifier language, i.e. a relatively acrolectal creole. A possible explanation for this striking discrepancy can be found in the primary function of Unserdeutsch as a marker of identity as well as in the linguistic structure of its substrate language Tok Pisin.
This paper provides insights into the ongoing international research project Unserdeutsch (Rabaul Creole German): Documentation of a highly endangered creole language in Papua New Guinea, based at the University of Augsburg, Germany. It elaborates on the different stages of the project, ranging from fieldwork to corpus development, thereby outlining the methods and software background used for the intended purposes. In doing so, we also give some approaches to solving specific problems, which have arisen in the course of practical work until now.
Der Beitrag liefert einen Einblick in korpuslinguistische Projekte und Aktivitäten aus dem österreichischen Sprachraum. Der Fokus liegt auf zwei primär auf die Analyse gesprochener Sprache ausgerichteten Korpora (DiÖ-Korpus und WBÖ-Korpus) sowie auf dem medial wie konzeptionell schriftlich angelegten Austrian Media Corpus. Institutionell eingebettet sind die Korpora in den Spezialforschungsbereich „Deutsch in Österreich (DiÖ)“ sowie in die Aktivitäten des Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage (ACDH-CH) an der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Die theoretisch-methodologische Perspektive der Diskussion ist eine variationslinguistische, wobei sozio- und systemlinguistische Aspekte im Beitrag Berücksichtigung finden.
Every Regional Dossier begins with an introduction about the region in question, followed by six chapters that each deal with a specific level of the education system (e.g. primary education). Chapters 8 and 9 cover the main lines of research into education of the minority language under discussion, and the prospects for the minority language in general and in education in particular, respectively. Chapter 10 provides a summary of statistics. Lists of (legal) references and useful addresses regarding the minority language are given at the end of the dossier.
This dossier consists of an introduction to the region under study, followed by six sections each dealing with a specific level of the education system. These brief descriptions contain factual information presented in a readily accessible way. Sections eight to ten cover research, prospects, and summary statistics. For detailed information and political discussions about language use at the various levels of education, the reader is referred to other sources with a list of publications.
Cette contribution se concentre sur les locuteurs de l’allemand en situation minoritaire dans le Caucase. Il s’agit de descendants d’anciennes minorités allemandes de l’Empire russe et de l’Union soviétique, qui ont émigré vers les territoires transcaucasiens en plusieurs phases à partir de la fin du xviiie siècle. Les personnes interrogées sont celles qui, en raison de mariages interethniques, ont évité les déportations de 1941 et vivent toujours dans le Caucase du Sud. Avec les méthodes caractéristiques de la sociolinguistique, l’auteure a enregistré, transcrit et analysé des entretiens formels semi-dirigés effectués en 2017 dans le Caucase du Sud avec deux générations de descendants. L’article présente la situation des variétés de l’allemand (dialecte souabe et allemand standard) et de leurs locuteurs dans des constellations de langues en contact dans le Caucase ainsi que les actions menées par différents groupes d’acteurs pour préserver la langue et la culture allemandes en Géorgie.
Le bas allemand, répandu dans le tiers nord de l’Allemagne, est une langue régionale dont l’existence est menacée. Elle compte certes encore un grand nombre de locuteurs, mais ceux-ci présentent une structure d’âge très défavorable. Depuis deux générations, la transmission de la langue au sein des familles n’est plus assurée et l’ensemble des locuteurs est fortement vieillissant. Il existe cependant une pratique de théâtre amateur très vivante dans le nord de l’Allemagne : 3 000 troupes de théâtre jouent en effet en bas allemand. Or ces petites unités organisationnelles touchent justement les jeunes avec leurs offres et leur ouvrent l’accès à la langue régionale. Une enquête menée en ligne en 2017 par le Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache et l’Institut für niederdeutsche Sprache auprès des troupes de théâtre amateur a montré que ces groupes peuvent offrir un cadre stable pour l’utilisation du bas allemand. De nombreux participants à cette enquête ont indiqué que la possibilité d’utiliser le bas allemand constituait pour eux une motivation importante pour participer à leur troupe de théâtre respective.
