Tilo Weber betont in seinem Beitrag die semantische Relevanz von Ereignissen bzw. Ereigniswissen, die er als eine besondere Form von sog. Frames betrachtet. Letztere lassen sich als heterogene und komplexe Wissensrahmen begreifen, die für lexikalische Einheiten und insbesondere für Verben eine besondere Bedeutung haben. Das kognitiv-funktionalistische Frame-Konzept erlaubt zudem, durchaus im Sinne der Tagung, einen interdisziplinären Zugang, insofern es, wie Weber meint, „ein Bindeglied zwischen Sprach-, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften sein kann.“
This replication study aims to investigate a potential bias toward addition in the German language, building upon previous findings of Winter and colleagues who identified a similar bias in English. Our results confirm a bias in word frequencies and binomial expressions, aligning with these previous findings. However, the analysis of distributional semantics based on word vectors did not yield consistent results for German. Furthermore, our study emphasizes the crucial role of selecting appropriate translational equivalents, highlighting the significance of considering language-specific factors when testing for such biases for languages other than English.
The project “Paronymwörterbuch” investigates and documents easily confused words (so-called paronyms) in German with respect to their use in public discourse as documented in a large corpus. These are, for example, antik/antiquiert/antiquarisch (antique/antiquated/antiquarian) or sportlich/sportiv (sporty/athletic). The results of this work are explanatory, contrastive entries in a new dynamic e-dictionary called “Paronyme − Dynamisch im Kontrast”. The objective of this paper is twofold. Firstly, essential new usage modalities of the new dictionary will be illustrated. As it is designed for contrastive consultation processes, the comparative structure of the entries will be elucidated and we will show how this dictionary has moved away from static to dynamic presentation by incorporating flexible consultation options. Secondly, as entries contain linguistic details which are consistently paired up with conceptual-encyclopaedic information, it is shown how this reference guide combines corpus-based methods with cognitive semantics. In this way, linguistic findings correlate better with how users conceptualise language by adequately reflecting ideas such as conceptual structure, categorisation and knowledge. Consequently, appropriate contrastive corpus tools and methods are employed. This paper also emphasises the need of semiotic approaches to the analysis of linguistic data in order to provide ostensive and cognitive-oriented lexical explanations. Such approaches are also necessary to guarantee an efficient pairwise investigation of paronyms. Advantages and disadvantages of explorative self-organising feature maps will be explained in more detail.
Using concurrent electroencephalogram and eye movement measures to track natural reading, this study shows that N400 effects reflecting predictability are dissociable from those owing to spreading activation. In comparing predicted sentence endings with related and unrelated unpredicted endings in antonym constructions (‘the opposite of black is white/yellow/nice’), fixation-related potentials at the critical word revealed a predictability-based N400 effect (unpredicted vs. predicted words). By contrast, event-related potentials time locked to the last fixation before the critical word showed an N400 only for the nonrelated unpredicted condition (nice). This effect is attributed to a parafoveal mismatch between the critical word and preactivated lexical features (i.e. features of the predicted word and its associates). In addition to providing the first demonstration of a parafoveally induced N400 effect, our results support the view that the N400 is best viewed as a component family.
Denken in Metaphern ist ein Charakteristikum menschlicher Kognition. Diese Überzeugung, die in der deutschen Linguistik insbesondere von Weinrich (1967) vertreten wurde, ist eines der Axiome der Kognitiven Semantik (Lakoff/Johnson 1980). Umfassende empirische Studien zur Metaphorik bestimmter Diskurse sind aber bislang selten. Im vorliegenden Artikel möchten wir einige Ergebnisse einer solchen Studie präsentieren, in der die Bildung eines Europa-Begriffs1 über Metaphern aus dem konzeptuellen Bereich des Bauwesens in der russischen und der deutschen Presse untersucht wurde. Zunächst stellen wir kurz die empirische Arbeit in dem Projekt, in dem die vorliegende Studie entstanden ist, vor (1). Danach präsentieren wir die Metaphorik des Bauwesens im russischen und deutschen Diskurs zu Europa (2). Abschließend erfolgt eine Diskussion der Ergebnisse (3).
