Researchers in Natural Language Processing rely on availability of data and software, ideally under open licenses, but little is done to actively encourage it. In fact, the current Copyright framework grants exclusive rights to authors to copy their works, make them available to the public and make derivative works (such as annotated language corpora). Moreover, in the EU databases are protected against unauthorized extraction and re-utilization of their contents. Therefore, proper public licensing plays a crucial role in providing access to research data. A public license is a license that grants certain rights not to one particular user, but to the general public (everybody). Our article presents a tool that we developed and whose purpose is to assist the user in the licensing process. As software and data should be licensed under different licenses, the tool is composed of two separate parts: Data and Software. The underlying logic as well as elements of the graphic interface are presented below.
In order to develop its full potential, global communication needs linguistic support systems such as Machine Translation (MT). In the past decade, free online MT tools have become available to the general public, and the quality of their output is increasing. However, the use of such tools may entail various legal implications, especially as far as processing of personal data is concerned. This is even more evident if we take into account that their business model is largely based on providing translation in exchange for data, which can subsequently be used to improve the translation model, but also for commercial purposes. The purpose of this paper is to examine how free online MT tools fit in the European data protection framework, harmonised by the EU Data Protection Directive. The perspectives of both the user and the MT service provider are taken into account.
In the last years a common notion of a Problem-Solving Method (PSM) emerged from different knowledge engineering frameworks. As a generic description of the dynamic behaviour of knowledge based systems PSMs are favored subjects of reuse. Up to now, most investigations on the reuse of PSMs focus on static features and methods as objects of reuse. By this, they ignore a lot of information of how the PSM was developed that is, in principle, entailed in the different parts of a conceptual model of a PSM.
In this paper the information of the different parts of PSMs is reconsidered from a reuse process point of view. A framework for generalized problem-solving methods is presented that describes the structure of a category of methods based on family resemblances. These generalized methods can be used to structure libraries of PSMs and - in the process of reuse - as a means to derive an incarnation, i.e. a member of its family of PSMs.
For illustrating the ideas, the approach is applied to the task rsp. problem type of parametric design.
A library of software components should be essentially more than just a juxtaposition of its items. For problem-solving methods the notion of a family is suggested as means to cluster the items and to provide partially a structure of the library. This paper especially investigates how the similar control flows of the members of such a family can be described in one framework.
Linguistik und Beruf: Ansatz zu einem praxisorientierten Studienplan für die Deutschlehrerausbildung

Durch linguistische Textvergleiche soll vorrangig die Frage beantwortet werden, ob zwei oder mehrere Texte den gleichen Autor und/oder Schreiber haben. Dabei suggeriert der in diesem Zusammenhang auch verwendete Titel „linguistischer Fingerab-druck“, daß dabei ein den naturwissenschaftlichen Verfahren vergleichbarer Sicherheitsgrad erreicht werden könnte. Die Autorin, wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Abteilung „Historische Lexikologie und Lexikographie“ am Institut für deutsche Sprache in Mannheim, erläutert, was von sprachlichen Textvergleichen kriminalistisch/forensisch tatsächlich erwartet werden darf.
Die öffentliche Akzeptanz und Wirkung natur- und technikwissenschaftlicher Forschung hängt grundlegend davon ab, ob sich die Ziele und Forschungsergebnisse an die Öffentlichkeit vermitteln lassen. Doch die Inhalte aktueller Forschungsvorhaben sind für ein Laienpublikum oft nur schwer zugänglich und verständlich. Vor dem Hintergrund, die gesellschaftliche Diskussion natur- und technikwissenschaftlicher Forschung zu verbessern, untersuchen und bewerten wir im Projekt PopSci – Understanding Science einen wichtigen Sektor des populärwissenschaftlichen Diskurses in Deutschland empirisch. Hierfür identifizieren wir die linguistischen Merkmale deutscher populärwissenschaftlicher Texte durch korpusbasierte Methoden und untersuchen deren Effekt auf die kognitive Verarbeitung der Texte durch Laien. Dazu setzen wir Vor- und Nachwissenstests ein. Außerdem messen wir die Blickbewegungen der Leserinnen und Leser, während sie populärwissenschaftliche Texte lesen. Aus dieser Kombination von unterschiedlichen Methoden versuchen wir, erste Empfehlungen zur Verbesserung des linguistischen Stils und der Wissensrepräsentation populärwissenschaftlicher Texte abzuleiten.
