Telephone-based remote interpreting has come into widespread use in multilingual encounters, all the more so in times of refugee crises and the large influx of asylum-seekers into Europe. Nevertheless, the linguistic practices in this mode of communication have not yet been examined comprehensively. This article therefore investigates selected aspects of turn-taking and clarification sequences during semi-authentic telephone-interpreted counselling sessions for refugees (Arabic–German). A quantitative analysis reveals that limited audibility makes it more difficult for interpreters to claim their turn successfully; in most cases, however, turn-taking occurs smoothly. The trouble sources that trigger queries are mainly content-related and interpreters vary greatly in the ways they deal with such difficulties. Contrary to what one might expect, the study shows that coordination fails only rarely during telephone-based remote interpreting.
An interactive, dynamic electronic dictionary aimed at text production should guide the user in innovative ways, especially in respect of difficult, complicated or confusing issues. This paper proposes a design for bilingual dictionaries intended to guide users in text production; we focus on complex phenomena of the interaction between lexis and grammar. It will be argued that a dictionary aimed at guiding the user in lexical selection should implement a type of “decision algorithm”. In addition, it should flag incorrect solutions and should warn against possible wrong generalisations of (foreign) language learners. Our proposals will be illustrated with examples from several languages, as the design principles are generally applicable. The copulative construction which is regarded as the most complicated grammatical structure in Northern Sotho will be analyzed in more detail and presented as a case in point.
Es wird zunächst der Bedeutungsbegriff untersucht, der bei der Übersetzung von Sprachen grundlegend ist, insbesondere beim Bestreben um semantische Äquivalenz. Es erweist sich dabei als zweckmäßig, mit Bierwisch drei Bedeutungen zu unterscheiden. Der zweite Teil des Artikels ist der Frage gewidmet, inwieweit für jede dieser Bedeutungen in Quell- und Zielsprache Äquivalenz erreichbar ist.
When translating narrative texts from French into German, translators mostly choose the German simple tense “Präteritum” as an equivalent for French simple tenses and the German perfect tense “Plusquamperfekt” as an equivalent for French perfect tenses. There are common cases
however when the translator expresses anteriority where French is underspecified. On the other hand, sometimes the translator (or the editor) decides not to express anteriority by a verb tense
even if there is a perfect tense in the French source text. This is the surprising result of this study based on a small corpus of contemporary novel translations.
