Social media, as the fifth estate, increasingly influence public discourses and play a major role in shaping public opinion. Undoubtedly, they have the potential to promote participation and democracy. On the other side, they also constitute a risk for democratic societies, as the spread of hate speech and fake news has shown. As a response, forms of counterspeech organised by civil society have emerged in social media to counter the normalisation of hate speech and democracy-threatening discourses. In order to influence discourse in social media in terms of the fifth estate, counterspeech campaigns must be visible also quantitatively. In this ethnographic contrastive study, I analysed the activities of the German and Finnish Facebook groups of the network #iamhere international. The intensity and continuity of their activities is obviously influenced by their strategic organisation: conventionalised rules support them whereas lacking or inconsequent rules seemed to be counterproductive.
Within a rapidly digitalising society, it is important to understand how the learning and teaching of digital skills play out in situ, particularly amongst older adults who acquire these skills later in life. This paper focuses on participants engaged in the process of learning digital skills in adult education courses. Using video recordings from adult education centres in Finland and Germany, we explore how students mobilise their teachers’ assistance when encountering problems with their smartphones, laptops or tablets. Prior research on social interaction has shown that assistance can be recruited through a variety of verbal and embodied formats. In this specific educational setting, participants can use complaints about their digital skills or mobile devices to obtain assistance. Utilising multimodal conversation analysis, we describe two basic sequence types involving students’ complaints, discuss their cross-linguistic characteristics, and reflect on their connection to this educational setting and digital devices.
cOWIDplus Analyse ist eine kontinuierlich aktualisierte Ressource zu der Frage, ob und wie stark sich der Wortschatz ausgewählter deutscher Online-Pressemeldungen während der Corona-Pandemie systematisch einschränkt und ob bzw. wann sich das Vokabular nach der Krise wieder ausweitet. In diesem Artikel erläutern die Autor*innen die hinter der Ressource stehende Forschungsfrage, die zugrunde gelegten Daten, die Methode sowie die bisherigen Ergebnisse.
The coronavirus pandemic may be the largest crisis the world has had to face since World War II. It does not come as a surprise that it is also having an impact on language as our primary communication tool. In this short paper, we present three inter-connected resources that are designed to capture and illustrate these effects on a subset of the German language: An RSS corpus of German-language newsfeeds (with freely available untruncated frequency lists), a continuously updated HTML page tracking the diversity of the vocabulary in the RSS corpus and a Shiny web application that enables other researchers and the broader public to explore the corpus in terms of basic frequencies.

Die Internetlinguistik ist eine neue Forschungsdisziplin, die sich aus drei großen Untersuchungsbereichen konstituiert: der Sprachverwendung in internetbasierten Kommunikationsumgebungen (wie Messengerdienste, Soziale Netzwerkseiten), der Interaktion zwischen Mensch und Maschine (etwa mit smarten Objekten) und der Generierung von Datenkorpora, was auch ethische Fragen aufwirft.
Dieser Band enthält neben einem kurzen Abriss über die Entwicklung der Internetlinguistik bibliografische Angaben zu Spezifika des Kommunikationsraums, der Kommunikationsplattformen und der digitalen Kommunikation, zu menschlichen Handlungsweisen im Web 2.0 und zu methodischen Zugängen der linguistischen Onlineforschung mit einem Überblick über Internetkorpora. Darüber hinaus werden Schnittstellen zu anderen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen aufgezeigt. Der Band gibt außerdem Empfehlungen zu einschlägigen Blogs und Zeitschriften.
