The concept of functional stylistics developed in the sixties and early seventies by Elise Riesel is reconsidered and modified in view of the results of a corpus-linguistic investigation by Douglas Biber and Edward Finegan. Instead of Riesel’s five functional styles an inventory of seven styles is suggested which may be presented either in hierarchic or in scalar notation. Furthermore, a distinction is drawn between focal and peripheral areas in the internal structure of functional styles and text genres; latent conventional style models as a basis of text production and text reception are postulated. Finally, an attempt is made to integrate the distinction between spoken and written text into the model of functional styles.
