In the first volume of Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory, Gries (2005. Null-hypothesis significance testing of word frequencies: A follow-up on Kilgarriff. Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory 1(2). doi:10.1515/cllt.2005.1.2.277. http://www.degruyter.com/view//cllt.2005.1.issue-2/cllt.2005.1.2.277/cllt.2005.1.2.277.xml: 285) asked whether corpus linguists should abandon null-hypothesis significance testing. In this paper, I want to revive this discussion by defending the argument that the assumptions that allow inferences about a given population – in this case about the studied languages – based on results observed in a sample – in this case a collection of naturally occurring language data – are not fulfilled. As a consequence, corpus linguists should indeed abandon null-hypothesis significance testing.
Analepses with topic-drop are frequent structures in German interaction. While hitherto the focus on analepses was a rather syntactic one, this paper deals with analeptic structures from a semantic perspective. It particularly concentrates on the semantic relations between the referents of the analepses and the prior interactional context. This analysis shows that even for rather simple analepses which just omit a constituent from the prior utterance, conceptual processes are more decisive for its interpretation than syntactic features of the antecedent constituents. This is even more the case for complex analepses that are only indirectly linked to the prior context, and for the interpretation of which hearers need to draw inferences. The paper argues that theoretical approaches like Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics can profit from adopting a semantic and conceptual perspective for the interpretation of interactional structures.
In the project LeGeDe („Lexik des gesprochenen Deutsch”), we are developing a corpus-based lexicographical resource focusing on features of the lexicon of spoken German. To investigate the expectations of future users, two studies were conducted: interviews with a smaller group of experts and a large-scale online survey. We report on selected results, mainly from the online survey and with a focus on the learning perspective. We want to show if and to which extent the L2-learners’
expectations differ from those of native speakers and in which aspects the two groups agree. We also want to give an outlook on the possibilities that will be available to learners in the planned lexicographical resource.
This paper presents observations on the phonetic realisations of the German particles ja – ‘yes’ and naja – approximately ‘well’. As part of a large-scale study on the particle ja, we identified numerous instances in the dataset that had been orthographically transcribed as ja, but were phonetically realised as [nja]. Using phonetic and functional parameters, we explore the question whether these instances can be attributed to either the lexeme ja or naja. While phonetic measurements yield ambivalent results, analyses of pragmatic parameters such as function and turn position seem to indicate that [nja] was predominantly intended to be ja, although some functional differences between ja and [nja] could also be identified.

Canadian heritage German across three generations: A diary-based study of language shift in action

It is well known that migration has an effect on language use and language choice. If the language of origin is maintained after migration, it tends to change in the new contact setting. Often, migrants shift to the new majority language within few generations. The current paper examines a diary corpus containing data from three generations of one German-Canadian family, ranging from 1867 to 1909, and covering the second to fourth generation after immigration. The paper analyzes changes that can be observed between the generations, with respect to the language system as well as to the individuals’ decision on language choice. The data not only offer insight into the dynamics of acquiring a written register of a heritage language, and the eventual shift to the majority language. They also allow us to identify different linguistic profiles of heritage speakers within one community. It is discussed how these profiles can be linked to the individuals’ family backgrounds and how the combination of these backgrounds may have contributed to giving up the heritage language in favor of the majority language.
Causatives in German

In this paper I argue for a unified account of causative constructions in German. The approach rests on assumptions for case assignment and subcategorization which will be independently motivated by an analysis of passive constructions. It will be shown that the difference between standard causatives and what I call causative passives should be analyzed as a special case of optional subcategorization: causative lassen optionally subcategorizes for an external argument of the embedded verb, the non-realization of which leads to a causative passive. The adoption of a (synthetic) passive bare infinitive, as advocated for in the literature, can thus be dispensed with. Instead, causative passive can be shown to function like a combination of causative and passive, thereby creating a "passivelike" structural context.

Mit Werkzeugen zum Auffinden, zur standardkonformen Aufbereitung und zur nachhaltigen Aufbewahrung von Daten sowie mit der Bereitstellung von virtuellen Forschungsumgebungen zur kollaborativen Erstellung und Auswertung von Forschungsdaten unterstützt CLARIN alle wesentlichen Aspekte des Datenmanagements und der Datenarchivierung. Diese CLARIN-Angebote werden durch Beratungs- und Schulungsmaßnahmen begleitet.
This paper discusses changes of lexicographic traditions with respect to approaches to meaning descriptions towards more cognitive perspectives. I will uncover how cognitive aspects can be incorporated into meaning descriptions based on corpus-driven analysis. The new German Online dictionary “Paronyme − Dynamisch im Kontrast” (Storjohann 2014; 2016) is concerned with easily confused words such as effektiv/effizient, sensibel/sensitiv. It is currently in the process of being developed and it aims at adopting a more conceptual and encyclopaedic approach to meaning by incorporating cognitive features. As a corpus-guided reference work it strives to adequately reflect ideas such as conceptual structure, categorisation and knowledge. Contrastive entries emphasise aspects of usage, comparing conceptual categories and indicate the (metonymic) mapping of knowledge. Adaptable access to lexicographic details and variable search options offer different foci and perspectives on linguistic information, and authentic examples reflect prototypical structures. Some of the cognitive features are demonstrated with the help of examples. Firstly, I will outline how patterns of usage imply conceptual categories as central ideas instead of sufficiently logical criteria of semantic distinction. In this way, linguistic findings correlate better with how users conceptualise language. Secondly, it is pointed out how collocates are treated as family members and fillers in contexts. Thirdly, I will demonstrate how contextual structure and functions are included summarising referential information. Details are drawn from corpus data, they are usage-based linguistic patterns illustrating conversational interaction and semantic negotiations in contemporary public discourse. Finally, I will outline consultation routines which activate different facets of structural knowledge, e.g. through changes of the ordering of information or through the visualisation of semantic networks.
Cutler, Anne: Native listening. Language experience and the recognition of spoken words [Rezension]

This article is a delineation of the "Projekt Klassikerwortschatz" that collects and processes those words in german literature between ca. 1750 and 1900 which are semantically different in today’s german due to language change. It is the aim of the project to publish a dictionary in print, on CD-ROM as well as on the internet that explains these words in order to help to understand the literary language of the german "classic period". The dictionary will therefore be a beginning of an attempt to fill the gap between Reichmann’s FWB, the DWB and the DWDS which curiously coincides with this important period of german literature. The article focuses on the survey phase, when voluntary readers marked those words that made it difficult for them to understand a passage, the digitalization and the processing within the computerized environment. The main focus is on the digital editorial system „Paula“ which has been developped specifically for the "Klassikerwörterbuch" and enables the lexicographer to focus exclusively on the content of the article rather than its format.
Das KLASSIKERWÖRTERBUCH ist ein in allen lexikographischen Arbeitsschritten digital erstelltes historisches Wörterbuch zur heute nicht mehr unmittelbar verständlichen Lexik in der „klassischen“ deutschen Dichtung des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Als semantisches „Differenzwörterbuch“ behandelt es die lexikalischen Einheiten, die gegenüber dem heutigen Bedeutungswissen eine Änderung in der Semantik und/oder der Verwendung erfahren haben. Grundsätze der Korpusbestimmung, der Lemmaauswahl usw. wurden bereits an anderer Stelle ausführlich erläutert (Knoop/Brückner 2003). Auch eine Beschreibung von Mikrostrukturen im KLASSIKERWÖRTERBUCH liegt vor (Brückner 2004). Der vorliegende Beitrag ergänzt die bisherigen Veröffentlichungen durch eine typologische Einordnung des KLASSIKERWÖRTERBUCHs und seiner Konzeption in die deutsche Wörterbuchlandschaft. Dabei ist es nicht das Ziel, eine allgemeingültige Einteilung vorzunehmen oder jeden erwähnten Wörterbuchtyp in seinen eigenen Besonderheiten vollständig und angemessen darzustellen, sondern darum, durch den Vergleich mit anderen existierenden oder denkbaren Wörterbüchern das Konzept des KLASSIKERWÖRTERBUCHs deutlicher hervortreten zu lassen.

In 1959, Lucien Tesnière wrote his main work Éléments de syntaxe structurale. While the impact on theoretical linguistics was not very strong at first, 50 years later there exist a variety of linguistic theories based on Tesnière's work. In computational linguistics, as in theoretical linguistics, dependency grammar was not very influential at first. The last 10–15 years, however, have brought a noticeable change and dependency grammar has found its way into computational linguistics. Syntactically annotated corpora based on dependency representations are available for a variety of languages, as well as statistical parsers which give a syntactic analysis of running text describing the underlying dependency relations between word tokens in the text. This article gives an overview of relevant areas of computational linguistics which have been influenced by dependency grammar. It discusses the pros and cons of different types of syntactic representation used in natural language processing and their suitability as representations of meaning. Finally, an attempt is made to give an outlook on the future impact of dependency grammar on computational linguistics.
Dieser Beitrag beleuchtet die Vor- und Nachteile korpusgestützter lexikografischer Methoden zur Ermittlung und Dokumentation sinnrelationaler Ausdrücke eines Stichwortes. Konkrete Beispiele aus der Praxis des elexiko-Wörterbuchs dienen der Veranschaulichung von Chancen als auch von konkreten Problemen, die die eingesetzten Methoden mit sich bringen. Für die Gewinnung potentieller Synonyme und Antonyme nutzt elexiko zwei unterschiedliche Verfahren, die mit verschiedenen Prämissen an ein Korpus als Datengrundlage herantreten (cf. Tognini-Bonelli 2001). Das korpusgesteuerte / korpusgeleitete Verfahren der Kollokationsanalyse und die zugrunde liegende Ermittlung von Ausdrücken mit verwandten Kollokationsprofi len (related profiles) (cf. Belica 2011) dienen der empirischen und statistischen Absicherung von sprachlichen Phänomenen. Sie erweisen sich aber als lückenhaft in Bezug auf einige Kontexte, in denen semantisch-konzeptuelle Beziehungen der Ähnlichkeit oder des Gegensatzes realisiert, aber nicht mit Korpustools erfasst werden. Mit der Anwendung der in elexiko komplementär genutzten korpusbasierten Vorgehensweise können diese Lücken teilweise gefüllt werden. Das Zusammenspiel beider Korpusansätze hat sich in der lexikografischen Praxis prinzipiell als vorteilhaft erwiesen, bringt jedoch auch Erkenntnisse zum Vorschein, die bisher weder linguistisch erfasst noch lexikografisch dokumentiert wurden und löst nicht, wie teilweise angenommen, das Problem inhaltlicher Inkonsistenzen (cf. Paradis/Willners 2007). Diese Aspekte werden anhand von konkreten Korpusbeispielen und Wörterbucheinträgen illustriert. Als Online-Wörterbuch profitiert elexiko von seinen schnellen Navigationsmöglichkeiten über Verlinkungen. Diese werden auch für sinnrelationale Partnerwörter wie Synonyme und Antonyme angelegt, um diverse Vernetzungsstrukturen nachvollziehbar zu machen. Die Arbeit mit einem Korpus kann bis zu einem gewissen Grad die Konsistenz der bidirektionalen Vernetzungen gewährleisten, sie aber nicht vollständig absichern. In diesem Beitrag wird auch die Frage beantwortet, inwieweit die erwähnten Korpusmethoden dazu beitragen, das gegenseitige Dokumentieren zwischen Synonym- oder Antonympaaren sicherzustellen. Anhand des für diese Zwecke entwickelten Tools vernetziko, einem Vernetzungsmanager, wird gezeigt, warum die Unterstützung zusätzlicher Software für eine konsistente Verlinkung zwischen paradigmatisch miteinander verbundenen Stichwörtern unerlässlich ist(Storjohann/Meyer 2012).
What is the subject of German linguistics? This seemingly simple question has no obvious answer. In the ZGL’s first issue, the editors required contributions to cover the whole of the German language and to be theoretically sound but application-orientated, whereas the current ZGL-homepage defines the German language of present and history in all its differentiations as its subject matter.
Looking through the fifty volumes of ZGL, three relationships can be identified as presumably enlightening the role of language, in particular the German language: language and mind; language and language use; language and culture. Though of a different systematic type, language and data should be added as an increasingly important pairing for conceptualizing language. On this basis, I also discuss the position of linguistic studies of the German language, mirrored in the ZGL-volumes, between social, cultural and natural sciences, as well as the corresponding epistemic approaches – like explaining vs. understanding.
Es gibt triftige theoretische und praktische Gründe — wir werden im Weiteren auf sie eingehen —, die Diskussion um die Funktion von Rechtschreibwörterbüchern und um ihre Gestaltung in Bezug auf das Deutsche zu führen. Das Erscheinen der „20., völlig neu bearbeitete[n] und erweiterte] Auflage“ der „Rechtschreibung der deutschen Sprache“ (Dudenverlag Mannheim/Leipzig/Wien/Zürich 1991) ist der äußere Anlass, um diese Diskussion in der ZGL zu eröffnen.
Das Archiv für Gesprochenes Deutsch (AGD, Stift/Schmidt 2014) am Institut für Deutsche Sprache ist die zentrale Sammelstelle für Korpora des Gesprochenen Deutsch. Gegründet als Deutsches Spracharchiv (DSAv) im Jahre 1932 hat es über Eigenprojekte, Kooperationen und Übernahmen von Daten aus abgeschlossenen Forschungsprojekten einen Bestand von etwa 50 Variations- und Gesprächskorpora aufgebaut. Heute ist dieser Bestand fast vollständig digitalisiert und wird zu einem großen Teil der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft über die Datenbank für Gesprochenes Deutsch (DGD) im Internet zur Nutzung in Forschung und Lehre angeboten.
Die Universität Bonn verfügt über ein elektronisches Korpus von Immanuel Kants gesammelten Schriften gemäß den Abteilungen 1–3 der Akademie-Ausgabe. Dieses Korpus bildet die Grundlage einer elektronischen Edition der Schriften Kants, auf die über die Webseite des ehemaligen Instituts für Kommunikationsforschung und Phonetik zugegriffen werden kann: http://www.ikp.uni-bonn.de/kant/. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird über den Umfang und den Zustand des Bonner Korpus und der elektronischen Edition berichtet.
A constructicon, i.e., a structured inventory of constructions, essentially aims at documenting functions of lexical and grammatical constructions. Among other parameters, so-called constructional collo-profiles, as introduced by Herbst (2018, 2020), are conclusive for determining constructional meanings. They provide information on how relevant individual words are for construction slots, they hint at usage preferences of constructions and serve as a helpful indicator for semantic peculiarities of constructions. However, even though collo-profiles constitute an indispensable component of constructicon entries, they pose major challengers for constructicographers: For a constructicographic enterprise it is not feasible to conduct collostructional analyses for hundreds or even thousands of constructions. In this article, we introduce a procedure based on the large language model BERT that allows to predict collo-profiles without having to extensively annotate instances of constructions in a given corpus. Specifically, by discussing the constructions X macht Y ADJP (‘x makes Y ADJ’, e.g. he drives him crazy) and N1 PREP N1 (e.g., bumper to bumper, constructions over constructions), we show how the developed automated system generates collo-profiles based on a limited number of annotated instances. Finally, we place collo-profiles alongside other dimensions of constructional meanings included in the German Constructicon.
Am Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim fand vom 17. bis 19.11.2016 die sechste Tagung des Netzwerks „Diskurs – interdisziplinär“ statt, diesmal zum Thema „Diskurs – kontrastiv“. An der Tagung nahmen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer aus Bosnien-Herzegowina, Deutschland, England, Polen, Serbien, Schweiz, Schweden, der Slowakei und Slowenien teil. Die 18 Vorträge waren fünf Sektionen zugeordnet: Prinzipien des Kontrastiven, Internationale Vergleiche, Metaphorik im internationalen Vergleich, kontrastive Semantik, Kulturen und Stereotype – transnational. Die Beiträge fokussierten dabei immer wieder folgende Fragestellungen: Wie werden gleiche Themen in unterschiedlichen Gesellschaften konstituiert und erörtert? Welche sprachlichen Auswirkungen haben die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Bedingungen, unter denen formal gleichwertige Diskursbeteiligte (z. B. außerparlamentarische Opposition, Bürgerinitiativen, Interessengruppen) in Bezug auf identische Diskursgegenstände sprachlich agieren? Inwiefern lassen sich ähnliche Diskurse als je spezifische Zeitphänomene darstellen? Inwiefern besteht strukturelle Identität/Similarität bzw. Differenz z. B. hinsichtlich der Verwendung vergleichbarer bzw. abweichender Leit- und Schlüsselwörter, Metaphern, Argumentationsmuster etc.? Neben Vorträgen, die sich derlei Fragestellungen widmeten, gab es zudem Beiträge, die sich auf empirischer Basis mit Methoden kontrastiver Diskursforschung auseinandersetzten.
In this paper, we analyze a dramatically aggravated conflict interaction taking place in the course of an association’s meeting in an urban community center. The interaction can be seen as the culmination point of a social conflict developing and increasing over a period of years. In this conflict, one of the crucial points of the sociocultural development in the city under study is to be seen in an exemplary way. Our analysis started with the question, why this conflict is unsolvable although the interest divergences of the opposing parties are not irreconcilable. Our analysis shows that the protagonists practice different communicative social styles. These stylistic differences however, are not the cause for misunderstandings, but the protagonists use stylistic differences and different cultural orientations as a resource for political action. Thereby a process of increasing hardening of perspective divergence emerges together with an interaction modality of drama and of the fundamental grounding of divergent views. Theoretically we are concerned with the explication of a sociolinguistic theory which includes as constitutive components the concepts of communicative social style, of perspectivation and of interaction modality. We want to show, that the analyzed type of sociocultural conflict can be explained by virtue of considering the interplay of features on these three levels.
This paper investigates emergent pseudo-coordination in spoken German. In a corpus-based study, seven verbs in the first conjunct are analyzed regarding the degree of semantic bleaching and the development of subjective or aspectual meaning components. Moreover, it is shown that each verb shows distinct tendencies for co-ocurrences, especially with deictic adverbs in the first conjunct and with specific verbs and verb classes in the second conjunct. It is argued that pseudo-coordination is originally motivated by the need for ‘chunking’ in unplanned speech and that it is still prominently used in this function in German, in contrast to languages in which pseudo-coordination is grammaticalized further.
In multimodal scholarly presentations supported by presentation software, spoken and written language, various visualizations on the projected slides as well as the contributors’ gestures and facial expressions build a meaningful oneness. On the one hand, communication scientists as well as linguists have for a relatively long time neglected the presentation as a complex form of communication. On the other hand, since Tafte (2003 ), columnists of major German newspapers have been dealing with the question of the value, the quality and the place of PowerPoint in science, they have even tried to find the answer to the question whether PowerPoint is evil or not.
The presentation practice is perceived as fundamentally deficient of systematic empirical research on presentations. Also Grabowski called attention to this desideratum with two critical articles (Grabowski 2003, 2008). Various questions - still unanswered - have motivated the implementation of a number of experiments (in the summer of 2010) for analyzing the knowledge and learning effects and the communicational impact of scientific presentations. The general aim of these experiments was to conduct empirical research on selected presentations in order to find out what kind of presentation is successful. The main interest is to find out which model of scholarly presentation produces the best results regarding learning effect and communicative impact.
Two empirical studies were carried out in the project „Lexik des gesprochenen Deutsch” (LeGeDe) at the Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim. The main goal of these studies was to shed light on people’s expectations of the planned lexicographical online-resource. In the first study, selected experts were interviewed in the form of a guided interview. In the second study, a broader online survey was conducted, which should reach a wider range of potential users. This contribution introduces the basic concepts of the project LeGeDe, outlines the two studies and presents selected results on four subject blocks: (i) sociodemographic data, (ii) personal use of (online) dictionaries, (iii) individual experience with the lexis of spoken language and (iv) expectations concerning a lexicographical online-resource for spoken German.
