The paper attempts to bridge the gap between semantics and the conceptualization and teaching of grammar at secondary school exemplarily concerning German demonstratives dies- and jen-. I show that existing accounts of these demonstratives in reference grammars and school books are far from being satisfactory, whilst at least for dies-, if not for jen-, there exist comprehensive linguistic analyses. I adapt these to offer a semantic analysis for jen- using corpus data from modern German with pronominal and adnominal jen-, and propose a didactically applicable category of 'shared mental space' of the speaker and the hearer for the demonstratives: I argue that speakers use demonstrative reference to anchor the referent inside resp. outside their and the hearers' shared mental space.

The thesis describes a fully automatic system for the resolution of the pronouns 'it', 'this', and 'that' in English unrestricted multi-party dialog. Referential relations considered include both normal NP-antecedence as well as discourse-deictic pronouns. The thesis contains a theoretical part with a comprehensive empiricial study, and a practical part describing machine learning experiments.
We present an implemented system for the resolution of it, this, and that in transcribed multi-party dialog. The system handles NP-anaphoric as well as discourse-deictic anaphors, i.e. pronouns with VP antecedents. Selectional preferences for NP or VP antecedents are determined on the basis of corpus counts. Our results show that the system performs significantly better than a recency-based baseline.

There are a number of linguistic elements whose deictic character is by and large uncontroversial, amongst them I, here and now (German ich, hier and jetzt). Recent theoretical and descriptive treatments, however, have based their definitions of deixis on divergent properties of such elements. In the first part of the present paper, twelve properties of deictic elements are compiled and discussed with particular reference to their general semiotic status. The second part focusses on the opposition of proximity and remoteness (as exemplified by German dies-/jen- and hier/dort) in a number of different types of deixis.
