Konstanz, Wandel, Variation.
(2016)
This article deals with the classification of German language islands and similar phenomena. It describes the existing types and presents criteria how to differentiate between them. Furthermore, it gives an insight into the historical and sociological reasons why these language islands came into existence and shows and explains changes they have undergone since then.
Objekte in wechselnder Beleuchtung. Regional- und Minderheitensprachen in West- und Mitteleuropa
(1999)
In our individualized society the individual by using a language has to take care of
surviving in a globalized world and of symbolizing his cultural identity at the same
time. For german speaking people this has conserquences as to the use of English as
an international language, of German as one of the national languages which reprensent
the variety of European culture and of regional idioms. The latter are used
partly as a normal means of communication, partly as a regional symbol of identity.
In this paper ways are scetched, how these questions can be dealt with by sociolinguistics.
