This thesis is a corpus linguistic investigation of the language used by young German speakers online, examining lexical, morphological, orthographic, and syntactic features and changes in language use over time. The study analyses the language in the Nottinghamer Korpus deutscher YouTube‐Sprache ("Nottingham corpus of German YouTube language", or NottDeuYTSch corpus), one of the first large corpora of German‐language comments taken from the videosharing website YouTube, and built specifically for this project. The metadatarich corpus comprises c.33 million tokens from more than 3 million comments posted underneath videos uploaded by mainstream German‐language youthorientated YouTube channels from 2008‐2018.
The NottDeuYTSch corpus was created to enable corpus linguistic approaches to studying digital German youth language (Jugendsprache), having identified the need for more specialised web corpora (see Barbaresi 2019). The methodology for compiling the corpus is described in detail in the thesis to facilitate future construction of web corpora. The thesis is situated at the intersection of Computer‐Mediated Communication (CMC) and youth language, which have been important areas of sociolinguistic scholarship since the 1980s, and explores what we can learn from a corpus‐driven, longitudinal approach to (online) youth language. To do so, the thesis uses corpus linguistic methods to analyse three main areas:
1. Lexical trends and the morphology of polysemous lexical items. For this purpose, the analysis focuses on geil, one of the most iconic and productive words in youth language, and presents a longitudinal analysis, demonstrating that usage of geil has decreased, and identifies lexical items that have emerged as potential replacements. Additionally, geil is used to analyse innovative morphological productiveness, demonstrating how different senses of geil are used as a base lexeme or affixoid in compounding and derivation.
2. Syntactic developments. The novel grammaticalization of several subordinating conjunctions into both coordinating conjunctions and discourse markers is examined. The investigation is supported by statistical analyses that demonstrate an increase in the use of non‐standard syntax over the timeframe of the corpus and compares the results with other corpora of written language.
3. Orthography and the metacommunicative features of digital writing. This analysis identifies orthographic features and strategies in the corpus, e.g. the repetition of certain emoji, and develops a holistic framework to study metacommunicative functions, such as the communication of illocutionary force, information structure, or the expression of identities. The framework unifies previous research that had focused on individual features, integrating a wide range of metacommunicative strategies within a single, robust system of analysis.
By using qualitative and computational analytical frameworks within corpus linguistic methods, the thesis identifies emergent linguistic features in digital youth language in German and sheds further light on lexical and morphosyntactic changes and trends in the language of young people over the period 2008‐2018. The study has also further developed and augmented existing analytical frameworks to widen the scope of their application to orthographic features associated with digital writing.
This paper focusss on the first Slavonic-Romanian lexicons, compiled in the second half of the 17th century and their use(rs), proposing a method of investigating the manner in which lexical information available in the above corpus relates, if at all, to the vocabulary of texts from the same period. We chose to investigate their relation to an anonymous Old Testament translation made from Church Slavonic, also from the second half of the 17th century, which was supposed to be produced in the same geographical area, in the same Church Slavonic school or even by the same author as the lexicons. After applying a lemmatizer on both the Biblical text (Books of Genesis and Daniel) and the Romanian material from the lexicons, we analyse the results and double the statistical analysis with a series of case studies, focusing on some common lexemes that might be an indicator of the relatedness of the texts. Even if the analysis points out that the lexicons might not have been compiled as a tool for the translation of religious texts, it proves to be a useful method that reveals interesting data and provides the basis for more extensive approaches.
The paper presents the process of developing the AirFrame database, a specialized lexical resource in which aviation terminology is defined in the form of semantic frames, following the methodology of the Berkeley FrameNet (FN). First, the structure of the database is presented, and then the methodology applied in developing and populating the database is described. The link between specialized aviation frames and general language semantic frames, of which frames defining entities, processes, attributes and events are particularly relevant, is discussed on the example of the semantic frame of Flight and its related frames. The paper ends with discussing possibilities of using AirFrame as a model for further developing resources in which general and specialized knowledge are linked.

Versified dictionaries are bilingual/multilingual glossaries written in verse form to teach essential words in any foreign language. In Islamic culture, versified dictionaries were produced to teach the Arabic language to the young generations of Muslim communities not native in Arabic. In the course of time, many bilingual/multilingual versified dictionaries were written in different languages throughout the Islamic world. The focus of this study is on the Turkish-German versified dictionary titled Almanca Tuhfe / Deutsches Geschenk [German Gift], published by Dr. Sherefeddin Pasha in Istanbul in 1916. This dictionary is the only dictionary in verse ever written combining these two languages. Moreover the dictionary is one of the few texts containing German words written in Arabic letters (applying Ottoman spelling conventions). The study concentrates on the way German words are spelled and tries to find out, whether Sherefeddin Pasha applied something like fixed rules to write the German lexemes.
Wortgeschichte digital (Digital Word History) is an emerging historical dictionary of the German language that focuses on describing semantic shifts from about 1600 through today. This article provides deeper insight into the dictionary’s “cross-reference clusters,” one of its software tools that performs visualization of its reference network. Hence, the clusters are a part of the project’s macrostructure. They serve as both a means for users to find entries of interest and a tool to elucidate relations among dictionary entries. Rather than delve into technical aspects, this article focuses on the applied logics of the software and discusses the approach in light of the dictionary’s microstructure. The article concludes with some considerations about the clusters’ advantages and limitations.
Der nationalsozialistische Interaktions- und Kommunikationsraum war mithin bevölkert von kommunikativ konstruierten Sozialfiguren. Hierbei gab es sowohl positiv Konnotierte (z. B. Volksgenosse, Nationalsozialist, Parteigenosse, SA-Mann, Alter Kämpfer) als auch negativ Konnotierte (z. B. Asozialer, Judenfreund, Schwarzer, Roter, Freimaurer). Diese stereotypisierten Sozialfiguren, an die wiederum vielfältige positive wie negative Attribuierungen geknüpft waren, stellten gleichsam Diskurspositionen dar, die anderen zugewiesen wurden oder eingenommen werden konnten – sofern den individuellen Voraussetzungen nach möglich – und die mit unterschiedlichen Graden der In- bzw. Exklusion einhergingen. Die folgenden Ausführungen konzentrieren sich auf zwei dieser Figuren, die spezifischer als Grenzfiguren begriffen werden können: Meckerer und Märzgefallene. Es wird untersucht, wie diese beiden Grenzfiguren sprachlich konstruiert, in welchen Kontexten und Kommunikationssituationen sie angeeignet und verwendet wurden. In beiden Fällen wird der Fokus dabei über den wörtlichen Ausdruck hinaus auf zeitgenössisch ähnliche oder eng verwandte Bezeichnungen ausgeweitet.
The paper presents the results of a survey on lexicographic practices and lexicographers’ needs across Europe that was conducted in the context of the Horizon 2020 project European Lexicographic Infrastructure (ELEXIS) among the observer institutions of the project. The survey is a revised and upgraded version of the survey which was originally conducted among ELEXIS lexicographic partner institutions in 2018 (Kallas et al. 2019a). The main goal of this new survey was to complement the data from the ELEXIS lexicographic partner institutions in order to get a more complete picture of lexicographic practices both for born-digital and retro-digitised resources in Europe. The results offer a detailed insight into many aspects of the lexicographic process at European institutions, such as funding, training, staff, lexicographic expertise, software and tools. In addition, the survey reflects on current trends in lexicography and reveals what institutions see as the most important emerging trends that will affect lexicography in the short-term and long-term future. Overall, the results provide valuable input informing the development of tools, resources, guidelines and training materials within ELEXIS.
This paper discusses an investigation of how senses are ordered across eight dictionaries. A dataset of 75 words was used for this purpose, and two senses were examined for each word. The words are divided into three groups of 25 words each according to the relationship between the senses: Homonymy, Metaphor, and Systematic Polysemy. The primary finding is that WordNet differs from the other dictionaries in terms of Metaphor. The order of the senses was more often figurative/literal, and it had the highest percentage of figurative senses that were not found. We discuss leveraging another dictionary, COBUILD, to re-order the senses according to frequency.
So far, Sepedi negations have been considered more from the point of view of lexicographical treatment. Theoretical works on Sepedi have been used for this purpose, setting as an objective a neat description of these negations in a (paper) dictionary. This paper is from a different perspective: instead of theoretical works, corpus linguistic methods are used: (1) a Sepedi corpus is examined on the basis of existing descriptions of the occurrences of a relevant verb, looking at its negated forms from a purely prescriptive point of view; (2) a "corpus-driven" strategy is employed, looking only for sequences of negation particles (or morphemes) in order to list occurring constructions, without taking into account the verbs occurring in them, apart from their endings. The approach in (2) is only intended to show a possible methodology to extend existing theories on occurring negations. We would also like to try to help lexicographers to establish a frequency-based order of entries of possible negation forms in their dictionaries by showing them the number of respective occurrences. As with all corpus linguistic work, however, we must regard corpus evidence not as representative, but as tendencies of language use that can be detected and described. This is especially true for Sepedi, for which only few and small corpora exist. This paper also describes the resources and tools used to create the necessary corpus and also how it was annotated with part of speech and lemmas. Exploring the quality of available Sepedi part-of-speech taggers concerning verbs, negation morphemes and subject concords may be a positive side result.
Applying terminological methods to lexicography helps lexicographers deal with the terms occurring in general language dictionaries, especially when it comes to writing the definitions of concepts belonging to special fields. In the context of the lexicographic work of the Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa, an updated digital version of the last Academia das Ciências de Lisboa’ dictionary published in 2001, we have assumed that terminology – in its dual dimension, both linguistic and conceptual – and lexicography are complementary in their methodological approaches. Both disciplines deal with lexical items, which can be lexical units or terms. In this paper, we apply terminological methods to improve the treatment of terms in general language dictionaries and to write definitions as a form of achieving more precision and accuracy, and also to specify the domains to which they belong. Additionally, we highlight the consistent modelling of lexicographic components, namely the hierarchy of domain labels, as they are term identification markers instead of a flat list of domains. The need to create and make available structured, organised and interoperable lexicographic resources has led us to follow a path in which the application of standards and best practices of treating and representing specialised lexicographic content are fundamental requirements.
Phonesthemes (Firth 1930) are sublexical constructions that have an effect on the lexico-grammatical continuum: they are recurring form-meaning associations that occur more often than by chance but not systematically (Abramova/Fernandez/Sangati 2013). Phonesthemes have been shown (Bergen 2004) to affect psycholinguistic language processing; they organise the mental lexicon. Phonesthemes appear over time to emerge as driven by language use as indexical rather than purely iconic constructions in the lexicon (Smith 2016; Bergen 2004; Flaksman 2020). Phonesthemes are acknowledged in construction morphology (Audring/Booij/Jackendoff 2017) as motivational schemas. Some phonesthemes also tend to have lexicographic acknowledgment, as shown by etymologist Liberman (2010), although this relevance and cohesion appears to be highly variable as we will show in this paper.
Der Beitrag präsentiert Ergebnisse des Projekts „Deutsch im Beruf: Die sprachlich-kommunikative Integration der Flüchtlinge“, das am Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) durchgeführt wird. Im ersten Teil wird auf die zweistufige Sprachstandserhebung in den allgemeinen Integrationskursen eingegangen, die zusammen mit dem Goethe-Institut umgesetzt wurde. Bei der ersten Erhebung zu Beginn der Kurse wurden mit einer Tabletumfrage die Sozialdaten und Sprachenbiografien der Teilnehmenden erhoben. Bei der zweiten Erhebung am Ende der gleichen Kurse ging es darum, mit Hilfe der Analyse von Sprachaufnahmen das erreichte mündliche Kompetenzniveau der Teilnehmenden zu ermitteln. Im zweiten Teil des Beitrags stellen wir Ergebnisse unserer ethnografisch-gesprächsanalytischen Feldstudien vor, die wir in verschiedenen Arbeitskontexten wie Qualifizierungsmaßnahmen, duale Berufsausbildung und betriebliche Praktika durchgeführt haben. In Bezug auf die zentralen Fragen zu gegenseitiger Verständigung und der Sprachvermittlung am Arbeitsplatz konnten wir im Rahmen unserer Ethnografien drei prototypische Praktiken feststellen, auf die wir näher eingehen: a) „kaum Verständnissicherung und Sprachvermittlung“, b) „ad-hoc Verständnissicherung und Sprachvermittlung“ und c) „systematische Verständnissicherung und Sprachvermittlung“. Des Weiteren fokussieren wir im letzten Teil des Beitrags die Ergebnisse unserer ethnografischen Langzeitstudie zu Betriebspraktika von studierenden Geflüchteten. Anhand der Untersuchung von Reparaturen zeigt sich hier die Entwicklung der interaktionalen Kompetenz eines L2-Sprechers, die mit einer zunehmenden kommunikativen Integration in Teamgesprächen einhergeht.
In der atelischen an-Konstruktion im Deutschen treten die Verben mit einer an-Präpositionalphrase auf (an etwas malen/essen/basteln). Basierend auf Korpusdaten wird in diesem Band gegen die verbreitete Alternationsanalyse der an-Konstruktion als präpositionales Pendant der transitiven Verbverwendung argumentiert. Stattdessen werden an-Phrasen als ereignisinterne Modifikatoren von einstelligen Activity-Verbvarianten analysiert, die eine in der lokalen Bedeutung der Präposition wurzelnde boundary-Relation einführen. Aus empirischer Perspektive wird ein Inventar von korpusbasierten Methoden und Maßen für die Untersuchung von (vermeintlichen) Argumentalternationen vorgestellt. Schließlich wird der bisher wenig diskutierte Zusammenhang von Argumentrealisierung und Metaphernbildung diskutiert.

Germany’s diverse history in the 20th century raises the question of how social upheavals were constituted in and through political discourse. By analysing basic concepts, the research network “The 20th century in basic concepts” (based at the Leibniz institutes IDS, ZfL, ZZF) aims to identify continuities and discontinuities in political and social discourse. In this way, historical sediments of the present are to be uncovered and those challenges identified that emerged in the course of the 20th century and continue to shape political discourse until the present.
In this paper, the author studies the role of the dictionary in the first language acquisition, highlighting its didactic value. Based on two Romanian lexicographical works of the 19th century, Lexiconul de la Buda (Buda, 1825) [the Lexicon of Buda] et Vocabularu romano-francesu (Bucarest, 1870) [the Romanian-French Vocabulary], the author analyses the normative information recorded in the articles in order to observe which level of language (i. e. phonetical, morphological, syntactical and lexical) is concerned. Such an approach allows to distinguish between the possible changings both at the level of the perception or at the grammatical, lexical and semantical description, i. e. the settlement of the word in the first language, and at a technical level, i. e. the making of article and of dictionary.
It was recently suggested in a study published in Nature Human Behaviour that the historical loosening of American culture was associated with a trade-off between higher creativity and lower order. To this end, Jackson et al. generate a linguistic index of cultural tightness based on the Google Books Ngram corpus and use this index to show that American norms loosened between 1800 and 2000. While we remain agnostic toward a potential loosening of American culture and a statistical association with creativity/order, we show here that the methods used by Jackson et al. are neither suitable for testing the validity of the index nor for establishing possible relationships with creativity/order.

Der folgende Beitrag untersucht Briefe aus der Zeitspanne des Nationalsozialismus, die von unterschiedlichen Akteur*innen in unterschiedlichen Beteiligungsrollen verfasst worden sind. Es handelt sich um von Soldaten und ihren Angehörigen verfasste Feldpost-, um von Gegner*innen des Nationalsozialismus geschriebene Haftbriefe sowie um Eingaben an Staats- und Parteiinstanzen, die Teil des institutionellen Briefverkehrs sind. Alle diese Formen des Briefschreibens besitzen eine längere Tradition. Ihre Nutzung während der NS-Zeit ist jedoch durch spezifische Ausprägungen gekennzeichnet, die in den jeweiligen Abschnitten beleuchtet werden.
Enabling appropriate access to linguistic research data, both for many researchers and for innovative research applications, is a challenging task. In this chapter, we describe how we address this challenge in the context of the German Reference Corpus DeReKo and the corpus analysis platform KorAP. The core of our approach, which is based on and tightly integrated into the CLARIN infrastructure, is to offer access at different levels. The graduated access levels make it possible to find a low-loss compromise between the possibilities opened up and the costs incurred by users and providers for each individual use case, so that, viewed over many applications, the ratio between effort and results achieved can be effectively optimized. We also report on experiences with the current state of this approach.
CLARIN, the "Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure", has established itself as a major player in the field of research infrastructures for the humanities. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the organization, its members, its goals and its functioning, as well as of the tools and resources hosted by the infrastructure. The many contributors representing various fields, from computer science to law to psychology, analyse a wide range of topics, such as the technology behind the CLARIN infrastructure, the use of CLARIN resources in diverse research projects, the achievements of selected national CLARIN consortia, and the challenges that CLARIN has faced and will face in the future.
The book will be published in 2022, 10 years after the establishment of CLARIN as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium by the European Commission (Decision 2012/136/EU).
The article analyzes communicative deviations that occur during the communication between German native speakers and non-native speakers, particularly Ukrainians. Despite existing intercultural and sociolinguistic studies, the analysis of language specificity that causes communicative deviations, failures and misunderstandings remains relevant and understudied. The purpose of this article is to identify and explore the German language peculiarities that cause misunderstandings in communication for non-native speakers, in particular Ukrainian speakers, and offer the algorithm for the representatives of different ethnic communities to help them avoid and resolve possible conflicts given the study of German as a foreign language. The status of the concept of communicative deviation in intercultural communication under conditions of insufficient communicative competence is determined in this article. The study uses the term communicative deviation in favor of a generalized term, a broad concept of linguistic, speech and communicative deviations in dialogic speech, in particular between native German speakers and non-native speakers. The empirical research was based on the speech activity of Ukrainian students during classes at the Department of German Studies and Translation (levels B2–C1) of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in 2019–2021 academic years and definitions from the Universal Dictionary of German Duden, in addition to the materials reflected in textbooks and teaching manuals as well as from authentic German-language sources. Communicative deviations are identified and analyzed in phonological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic aspects.
To effectively design online tools and develop sophisticated programs, for the teaching of Ancient Greek language, there is a clear need for lexical resources that provide semantic links with Modern Greek. This paper proposes a microstructure for an online Ancient Greek to Modern Greek thesaurus (AMGthes) that serves educational purposes. The terms of this bilingual thesaurus have been selected from reference Ancient Greek texts, taught and studied during lower and upper secondary education in Greece. The main objective here is to build a semantic map that helps students find relevant and semanti- cally related terms (synonyms and antonyms) in Ancient Greek, and then provide a rich set of suitable translations and definitions in Modern Greek. Designed to be an online resource, the thesaurus is being developed using web technologies, and thus will be available to every school and university student that pursues a degree in digital humanities.
This think-aloud study charts the use of online resources by five final-year MA students in Nordic and Literacy Studies based on the analysis of screen and audio recordings of an error-correction task. The article briefly presents some linguistic features of Norwegian Nynorsk that are not common in the context of other European languages, that is, norm optionality with regards to inflection and spelling. While performing the task, the participants were allowed to use all digital aids. This article examines their resource consultation behavior, and it makes use of Laporte/Gilquin’s (2018) annotation protocol. The following research questions are posed: What online resources are used by the students? What characterizes the use? Are online resources helpful? This study provides new insights into an as yet little explored topic within the Norwegian context. The findings demonstrate that the participants relied heavily on the official monolingual dictionary Nynorskordboka. Indeed, the dictionary was helpful in the vast majority of the searches, either resulting in error improvement or the validation of a word; that is, many of the searches considered correct words. The findings suggest severe norm insecurity and emphasize the need to improve norm knowledge and metalinguistic knowledge as prerequisites for better utilization of aids. It is also suggested to include necessary information on norm optionality and other commonly queried issues in the dictionary architecture.
This paper focuses on standardological and lexicographical aspects of Coronavirus-related neologisms in Croatian. The presented results are based on corpus analysis. The initial corpus for this analysis consists of terms collected for the Glossary of Coronavirus. This corpus has been supplemented by terms we collected on the Internet and from the media. The General Croatian corpora: Croatian Web Corpus – hrWaC (cf. Ljubešić/Klubička 2016) and Croatian Language Repository (cf. Brozović Rončević/Ćavar 2008: 173–186) were also used, but since they do not include neologisms that entered the language after 2013, they could be used only to check terms in the language before that time. From October 2021, a specialized Corona corpus compiled by Štrkalj Despot and Ostroški Anić (2021) became publicly available on request. The data from these corpora are analyzed by Sketch Engine (cf. Kilgarriff et al. 2004: 105–116), a corpus query system loaded with the corpora, enabling the display of lexeme context through concordances and (differential) word sketches and the extraction of keywords (terms) and N-grams. The most common collocations are sorted into syntactic categories. For English equivalents, in addition to the sources found on the Internet, enTenTen2020 corpus was consulted. In the second part of the paper, we analyze and compare the presentation of Coronavirus terminology in the descriptive Glossary of Coronavirus and the normative Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik.
Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, eine Software zu entwickeln, die quantitative und qualitative korpuslinguistische Methoden miteinander verbindet. Die Gesamtarbeit besteht daher aus zwei Teilen: einer Open-Source-Software und dem schriftlichen Teil. Der hier vorgelegte schriftliche Teil ist eine vollständige Dokumentation (Handbuch), ergänzt um eigene Publikationen, die im Rahmen des Dissertationsprojekts entstanden. In Kapitel 1.2 Korpora und beispielhafte Fragestellungen (S. 8) erfolgt eine Illustration beispielhafter Forschungsfragen anhand bereitgestellter und im Corpus- Explorer integrierter Korpora. Außerdem werden unter "?? ?? (S. ??)" Analysen mit verschiedensten prototypischen Forschungsfragen verknüpft, die sowohl quantitative als auch qualitative Perspektiven einnehmen. Der CorpusExplorer wurde besonders nutzerfreundlich gestaltet. Dabei ist die Zielgruppe der Software sehr breit defniert: Die Nutzung soll sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der Lehre möglich sein. Daher richtet sich der CorpusExplorer gleichermaßen an Studierende und Forschende mit ihren jeweils spezifschen Bedürfnissen. Die Nutzung für die Forschung zeigt sich (A) an den integrierten Artikeln sowie daran, dass (B) andere Forschende den CorpusExplorer bereits für ihre Arbeit aufgegriffen haben. Der Nutzen für die Lehre wurde mehrfach selbst erprobt und optimiert. Im Lehr-Einsatz ist es wichtig, dass Korpora mit wenigen Mausklicks analysefertig sind und verschiedene Analysen und Visualisierungen direkt genutzt werden können. Studierende erhalten so die Möglichkeit, eigenes Korpusmaterial direkt und selbst auszuwerten. Für Forschende bietet der CorpusExplorer ein sehr breites Funktionsspektrum. Im Vergleich zu anderer (öffentlich verfügbarer) korpuslinguistischer Software verfügt er aktuell über das wohl breiteste Anwendungsspektrum (51 Analysemodule (inkl. weiterentwickelter Verfahren), über 100 unterstützte Dateiformate für Im- und Export, unterschiedliche Tagger mit 69 unterstützten Sprachmodellen). Er kann so in bestehende Skripte, Toolchains und Workflows für sehr unterschiedliche Forschungsfragen integriert werden. Im CorpusExplorer wurden nicht nur bestehende Funktionen gebündelt, es wurden auch bisherige Verfahren weiterentwickelt. Hierzu zählen z. B. (1) die Entwicklung einer eigenen, an korpuslinguistischen Bedürfnissen ausgerichteten Datenbank- Struktur, (2) die Weiterentwicklung bzw. Optimierung des Verfahrens der Kookkurrenz- Analyse hin zu einer quantitativen Kookkurrenz-Analyse (keine Parameter wie Suchfenstergröße oder Suchwort nötig, Berechnung aller Kookkurrenzen zu allen Token in einem Korpus) und (3) die Verknüpfung unterschiedlicher Analyseressourcen, wie z. B. der NGram- und der Kookkurrenz-Analyse.
We present the use of count-based and predictive language models for exploring language use in the German Reference Corpus DeReKo. For collocation analysis along the syntagmatic axis we employ traditional association measures based on co-occurrence counts as well as predictive association measures derived from the output weights of skipgram word embeddings. For inspecting the semantic neighbourhood of words along the paradigmatic axis we visualize the high dimensional word embeddings in two dimensions using t-stochastic neighbourhood embeddings. Together, these visualizations provide a complementary, explorative approach to analysing very large corpora in addition to corpus querying. Moreover, we discuss count-based and predictive models w.r.t. scalability and maintainability in very large corpora.
Within the scope of the project "Study and dissemination of COVID-19 terminology", the study reported here aims to detect, analyse and discuss the characteristics of COVID-19 terminology, in particular the role of the adjective novo [new] in this terminology, the high recurrence of terms in the plural and the resemantization of some of the terminological units used. The present paper also discusses how these characteristics influenced the choices that have guided the creation of the proposed dictionary. This paper presents, therefore, the results of the analyses of these aspects, starting with a discussion of the relation between terminology and neology and arriving at the characteristic aspects of the macrostructural and microstructural choices about which some considerations were made.
Lexicographers working with minority languages face many challenges. When the language in question is also a sign language, circumstances specific to the visual-spatial modality have to be taken into consideration as well. In this paper, we aim to show and discuss which challenges we encounter while compiling the Digitales Wörterbuch der Deutschen Gebärdensprache (DW-DGS), the first corpus-based dictionary of German Sign Language (DGS). Some parallel the challenges minority language lexicographers of spoken languages encounter, e. g. few resources, no written tradition, and having to create one dictionary for all potential user groups, while others are specific to sign languages, e. g. representation of visual-spatial language and creating access structures for the dictionary.
This paper describes a method for automatic identification of sentences in the Gigafida corpus containing multi-word expressions (MWEs) from the list of 5,242 phraseological units, which was developed on the basis of several existing open-access lexical resources for Slovene. The method is based on a definition of MWEs, which includes information on two levels of corpus annotation: syntax (dependency parsing) and morphology (POS tagging), together with some additional statistical parameters. The resulting lexicon contains 12,358 sentences containing MWEs extracted from the corpus. The extracted sentences were analysed from the lexicographic point of view with the aim of establishing canonical forms of MWEs and semantic relations between them in terms of variation, synonymy, and antonymy.
This paper gives an insight into a cross-media publishing process on different stages: from a printed bilingual syntagmatic dictionary for GFL to an online learner’s dictionary of German collocations to a German learner’s dictionary portal. On the basis of an sql database specially developed for a corpus-guided dictionary of German collocations, the bilingual syntagmatic learner’s dictionary KolleX was published in 2014. The first part of the article describes this lexicographic process, focusing the most relevant aspects of the dictionary concept, e. g. dictionary type, subject matter, corpus guided data selection and microstructure. The second part introduces the first online version of KolleX from 2016 and the profound changes in the editing system – from a desktop version (2005) to a web-based editing system (2016) –, which resulted successively in a prototype of a German learner’s dictionary portal, called E-KolleX DaF (2018–). Focusing on the aspects of dynamism and integration of different resources from a learner’s perspective the paper shows the innovative features of this new online reference work. The contribution presents the solutions for the integration of new datatypes in the database of KolleX and the linking to different data in German monolingual dictionary platforms. The paper outlines the web design, functioning and technical improvements of E-KolleX DaF. The conclusions provide an outlook to the forthcoming challenges.
This paper describes the results of an empirical investigation carried out within the project Lessico Multilingue dei Beni Culturali (LBC), whose aim is to create a multilingual online dictionary of the lexicon of the Italian artistic heritage. The dictionary, whose lexicographic process has already started, is intended for linguists and specialist translators as well as for professionals in the tourism sector and students of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The investigation conducted through a questionnaire submitted to undergraduate students at the University of Milan and at the University of Florence has a double aim: to research the habits in the use of lexicographic tools by possible users of the dictionary (Italian Learners of German Language), and to identify preferences regarding macro-, medio- and microstructural features of the future LBC-dictionary to realize a user-friendly tool. After a brief introduction on the state of the art of the survey in the field of Dictionary Users Studies, the article describes the questionnaire and the results obtained from the pilot study. A summary and a discussion on the future developments of the project conclude the work.
Vorgestellt wird das Korpus deutschsprachiger Songtexte als innovative Sprachdatenquelle für interdisziplinäre Untersuchungsszenarien und speziell für den Einsatz im Fremd- und Zweitsprachenunterricht. Die Ressource dokumentiert Eigenschaften konzeptioneller Schriftlichkeit und konzeptioneller Mündlichkeit und erlaubt empirisch begründete Analysen sprachlicher Phänomene bzw. Tendenzen in den Texten moderner Popmusik. Vorgestellt werden Design, Annotationen und Anwendungsbeispiele des in thematische und autorenspezifische Archive stratifizierten Korpus.
Um eine bessere Erreichbarkeit und Zugänglichkeit zu bestehenden sowie neuen Angeboten von Lehr- und Schulungsmaterialien im Bereich der Digital Humanities zu ermöglichen, sollten diese in einem zentralen Verzeichnis zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Im Rahmen des CLARIAH-DE Projekts wurde – zunächst für die Umsetzung eines Projektmeilensteins – eine Lösung gesucht, die eine übergreifende Suche in frei zugänglichen und nachnutzbaren Lehr- und Schulungsmaterialien zu Forschungsmethoden, Verfahren sowie Werkzeugen im Bereich der Digital Humanities in unterschiedlichen Plattformen und Repositorien bietet.
This paper presents the decisions behind the design of a maths dictionary for primary school children. We are aware that there has been a considerable problem regarding Mexican children’s performance in maths dragging on for a long time, and far from getting better, it is getting worse. One of the probable causes seems to be the lack of coordination between maths textbooks and teaching methods. Most maths textbooks used in primary schools include lots of activities and problem-solving techniques, but hardly any conceptual information in the form of definitions or explanations. Consequently, many children learn to do things, but have difficulty understanding mathematical concepts and applying them in different contexts. To help solve this problem, at least partially, the project of the dictionary was launched aiming at helping children to grasp and understand maths concepts learned during those first six years of their formal education. The dictionary is a corpus-based terminographical product whose macrostructure, microstructure, typography, and additional information were specifically designed to help children understand mathematical concepts.
In this paper, we propose a controlled language for authoring technical documents and report the status of its development, while maintaining a specific focus on the Japanese automotive domain. To reduce writing variations, our controlled language not only defines approved and unapproved lexical elements but also prescribes their preferred location in a sentence. It consists of components of a) case frames, b) case elements, c) adverbial modifiers, d) sentence-ending functions, and e) connectives, which have been developed based on the thorough analyses of a large-scale text corpus of automobile repair manuals. We also present our prototype of a writing assistant tool that implements word substitution and reordering functions, incorporating the constructed controlled language.
In foreign language teaching the use of dictionaries, especially bilingual, has always been related to the hypotheses concerning the relationship between the native language (L1) and second language acquisition method. If the bilingual dictionary was an obvious tool in the grammar-translation method, it was banned from the classroom in the direct, audiolingual and audiovisual methods. Also in the communicative method, foreign language learners are discouraged from using a dictionary. Its use should not obstruct the goals of communicatively oriented foreign language learning – a view still held by many foreign language teachers. Nevertheless, the reality has been different: Foreign language learners have always used dictionaries, even if they no longer possess a print dictionary and mainly use online resources and applications. Dictionaries and online resources will continue to play an important role in the future. In the Council of Europe’s language policy, with its emphasis on multilingualism and lifelong learning, the adequate use of reference tools as a strategic skill is highlighted. In several European countries, educational guidelines refer to the use of dictionaries in the context of media literacy, both in mother tongue and foreign language teaching. Not only is their adequate use important, but so too is the comparison, assessment and evaluation of the information presented, in order to develop Language Awareness and Language Learning Awareness. This is good news. However, does this mean that dictionaries are actually used in class? What role do dictionaries play in foreign language teaching in schools and universities? Are foreign language learners in the digital era really competent users? And how competent are their teachers? Are they familiar with the current (online) dictionary landscape? Can they support their students? After a more in-depth study of the status quo of dictionary use by foreign language learners and teachers and the gap between their needs and the reality, this contribution discusses the challenges facing lexicographers and meta-lexicographers and what educational policy measures are necessary to make their efforts worthwhile in turning foreign language learners – and their teachers – into competent users in a multilingual and digital world.
In a multilingual and multicultural society, dictionaries play an important role to enhance interlingual communication. A diversity of languages and different levels of dictionary culture demand innovative lexicographic approaches to establish a dictionary landscape that responds to the needs of the various speech communities. Focusing on the South African situation this paper discusses some aspects of a few dictionaries that contributed to an improvement of the local dictionary landscape. Using the metaphors of bridges, dykes and sluice gates it is shown how lexicographers need a balanced approach in their lemma selection and treatment. Whilst a too strong prescriptive approach can be to the detriment of the macrostructural selection, a lack of regulatory criteria could easily lead to a data overload. The lexicographer should strive to give a reflection of the actual language use and enable the users to retrieve the information that can satisfy their specific communication and cognitive needs. Such lexicographic products will enrich and improve the dictionary landscape.
Im Folgenden soll es um kommunikative Praktiken in einem geheimen US-Kriegsgefangenenlager gehen, in dem deutsche Wehrmachtssoldaten inhaftiert waren, die dort verhört und deren Zellengespräche heimlich abgehört, mitgeschnitten und protokolliert wurden. Anhand von Auszügen aus verschiedenen Dokumententypen soll ein Schlaglicht auf die medial zugerichteten Praktiken des Verhörlagers geworfen werden. Die These, der in diesem Kapitel nachgegangen wird, lautet, dass die Protokollier- und Dokumentationspraktiken der Gefangennehmenden ebenso wie die durch sie dokumentierten Situationen die soziale Ordnung im Verhörlager wesentlich prägten und sich folglich aus ihnen figurierende Praktiken der sozialen Kategorisierung ablesen lassen, die einen Rückschluss auf die brüchige Übergangssituation zwischen politischen Systemen bzw. politisch geprägten Arrangements und Konstellationen, in denen die Beteiligten sich befanden, ermöglichen. Somit kennzeichnen die bearbeiteten kommunikativen Praktiken auch, wenngleich nicht durchgehend und auch nicht sonderlich explizit, Bezugnahmen auf und Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Nationalsozialismus, die zeitlich während des Nationalsozialismus, aber räumlich (und somit territorial, auch in einem ordnungspolitischen Sinne) außerhalb des Nationalsozialismus stattfanden.
Die »Prestigeveranstaltung Olympische Spiele« (ebd.) war Gegenstand eines höchst komplexen multimodalen und multimedialen, in allen semiotischen Dimensionen stattfindenden Diskurses. Aus kulturlinguistischer Sicht war der Diskurs der Olympischen Spiele von 1936 ein sprachliches Realisat, in dem sich Faktoren einer sprachlichen Sozialgeschichte verdichteten. Der Hauptfokus ist im Folgenden auf die Frage gerichtet, wie und mit welchen kommunikativen Praktiken Beteiligte aus entgegengesetzten Diskurspositionen auf die Olympischen Spiele Bezug nahmen, um die aufgrund je spezifischer Haltungen zu den Spielen konträren Ereigniskonstitutionen ›olympische Sommerspiele‹ sichtbar zu machen.
Der Beitrag rekonstruiert die Geschichte des Korpus „Deutsche Mundarten: DDR“ von den ersten Planungen der Tonaufnahmen am Beginn der 1950er Jahre über ihre Durchführung und Aufbereitung bis hin zur Rezeption in der Sprachwissenschaft der DDR und der BRD. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf das Verhältnis der DDR-Aufnahmen zum impulsgebenden Parallelprojekt Zwirners gelegt. Am Schicksal des Korpus wird überdies nachgezeichnet, wie sich die Dialektologie in der DDR unter politischem Druck in die Richtung einer modernen Regionalsprachenforschung entwickelte. Quellengrundlage der Korpusgeschichte sind Archivbestände der ehemaligen Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR, Akten zur Förderung Eberhard Zwirners durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft sowie zeitgenössische und neuere linguistische Publikationen, die mit dem Aufnahmekorpus gearbeitet haben.
Dieses Kapitel lotet Möglichkeiten und Methoden aus, digitale Diskursanalysen nationalsozialistischer Quellentexte durchzuführen. Digitale Technologie wird dabei als heuristisches Werkzeug betrachtet, mit dem der Sprachgebrauch während des Nationalsozialismus im Rahmen größerer Quellenkorpora untersucht werden kann. In einem theoretischen Abschnitt wird grundsätzlich dafür plädiert, während des Analyseprozesses hermeneutisches Sinnverstehen mit breitflächigen korpusbasierten Abfragen zu kombinieren. Verdeutlicht wird diese Herangehensweise an zwei empirischen Beispielen: Anhand eines Korpus von Hitler- und Goebbels-Reden wird dem Auftauchen und der diskursiven Ausgestaltung des nationalsozialistischen Konzepts „Lebensraum“ nachgespürt. Schritt für Schritt wird offengelegt, welche Analysewege durch das Abfragen von Schlüsseltexten, Keywords, Konkordanzen und Kollokationen verfolgt werden können. Das zweite Beispiel zeigt anhand von Eingaben, die aus der Bevölkerung an Staats- und Parteiinstanzen gerichtet wurden, wie solche Quellen mithilfe eines digitalen Tools manuell annotiert werden können, um sie danach auf Musterhaftigkeiten im Sprachgebrauch hin auswerten zu können.

Ethical issues in Language Resources and Language Technology are often invoked, but rarely discussed. This is at least partly because little work has been done to systematize ethical issues and principles applicable in the fields of Language Resources and Language Technology. This paper provides an overview of ethical issues that arise at different stages of Language Resources and Language Technology development, from the conception phase through the construction phase to the use phase. Based on this overview, the authors propose a tentative taxonomy of ethical issues in Language Resources and Language Technology, built around five principles: Privacy, Property, Equality, Transparency and Freedom. The authors hope that this tentative taxonomy will facilitate ethical assessment of projects in the field of Language Resources and Language Technology, and structure the discussion on ethical issues in this domain, which may eventually lead to the adoption of a universally accepted Code of Ethics of the Language Resources and Language Technology community.
The digital environment represents a qualitatively new level of service for research work with linguistic information presented in dictionary form. And first of all, this applies to index systems. By dictionary indexing we mean a set of formalized rules and procedures, on the basis of which it is possible to obtain information about certain linguistic facts recorded in the dictionary. These rules are implemented in the form of user interfaces. However, one should take into account the fact that the effectiveness of automatic construction of index schemes for a digital dictionary is possible only in a sufficiently formalized environment. This article describes the method and technology of indexing the Etymological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language (EDUL). For the language indexing of the dictionary, a special computer instrumental system (VLL – virtual lexicographic laboratory) was developed, and adapted to the structure of the EDUL and focused on the creation of indexes in automatic mode. The digital implementation of the EDUL made it possible to access the entire corpus of the dictionary text regardless of the time of publication of the corresponding volume and opened up opportunities for various digital interpretations of etymological information.
In diesem Beitrag wird der in den vorliegenden zwei Bänden häufig verwendete Terminus ›Exklusion‹ systematisch und empirisch fundiert als akteursdifferenziertes Beschreibungselement interpretiert. Diese Akteursdifferenzierung(nach NS-Apparat, NS-affin, ausgeschlossen) bedeutet, Exklusion im Sinn einer sprachlich-kommunikativen Praktik bzw. Strategie und unter der Voraussetzung, dass wir es hinsichtlich der entsprechenden sprachlichen Realisate mit Identitätszu- und -abschreibungen zu tun haben, als Identitätsmanagement in den drei Handlungsperspektiven zu beschreiben.
This paper describes a method for extracting collocation data from text corpora based on a formal definition of syntactic structures, which takes into account not only the POS-tagging level of annotation but also syntactic parsing (syntactic treebank model) and introduces the possibility of controlling the canonical form of extracted collocations based on statistical data on forms with different properties in the corpus. Specifically, we describe the results of extraction from the syntactically tagged Gigafida 2.1 corpus. Using the new method, 4,002,918 collocation candidates in 81 syntactic structures were extracted. We evaluate the extracted data sample in more detail, mainly in relation to properties that affect the extraction of canonical forms: definiteness in adjectival collocations, grammatical number in noun collocations, comparison in adjectival and adverbial collocations, and letter case (uppercase and lowercase) in canonical forms. The conclusion highlights the potential of the methodology used for the grammatical description of collocation and phrasal syntax and the possibilities for improving the model in the process of compilation of a digital dictionary database for Slovene.
This paper presents the methodology of a research project on the use of specialised German dictionaries. A mixed-methods research approach will help to answer the following main questions, concerning the lexicographic presentation of the data on the one hand and the data collection on the other hand: How do different systems of data organization and presentation affect the likelihood that users will correctly find and select the data they look up? And does the probability of success increase if users are familiar with the system? Which advantages and disadvantages do lexicographers and specialised languages experts see in using quantitative methods to extract terms? And are these methods accepted and considered reliable by the user community?
Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre wird am Institut für deutsche Sprache (IDS) in Mannheim erforscht, wie der hochkomplexe Gegenstandsbereich „Grammatik“ unter Ausnutzung hypertextueller Navigationsstrukturen wissenschaftlich fundiert und anschaulich vermittelt werden kann. Eine zentrale Bedeutung kommt folglich einer konsistenten, theorieübergreifenden Vernetzung sämtlicher Textinhalte zu. Um eine automatisierbare Bezugnahme zwischen mit unterschiedlichem terminologischem Vokabular formulierten, aber das gleiche sprachliche Phänomen beschreibenden Inhalten zu befördern, bildet eine onomasiologisch konzipierte Terminologiedatenbank das Rückgrat des Online-Systems. Der Beitrag beschreibt Konzeption und Aufbau der skizzierten linguistischen Fachterminologie.
Looking up for an unknown word is the most frequent use of a dictionary. For languages both agglutinative and inflectional, such as Georgian, this can be quite challenging because an inflected form can be very far from the lemmas used by the target dictionary. In addition, there is no consensus among Georgian lexicographers on which lemmas represent a verb in dictionaries. It further complicates dictionaries access. Kartu-Verbs is a base of inflected forms of Georgian verbs accessible by a logical information system. It currently contains more than 5 million inflected forms related to more than 16,000 verbs for 11 tenses; each form can have 11 properties; there are more than 80 million links in the base. This demonstration shows how, from any inflected form, we can find the relevant lemma to access any dictionary. Kartu-Verbs can thus be used as a front-end to any Georgian dictionary.
We examine moments in social interaction in which a person formulates what another thinks or believes. Such formulations of belief constitute a practice with specifiable contexts and consequences. Belief formulations treat aspects of the other person's prior conduct as accountable on the basis that it provided a new angle on a topic, or otherwise made a surprising contribution within an ongoing course of actions. The practice of belief formulations subjectivizes the content that the other articulated and thereby topicalizes it, mobilizing commitment to that position, an account, or further elaboration. We describe how the practice can be put to work in different activity contexts: sometimes it is designed to undermine the other's position as a subjective 'mere belief', at other times it serves to mobilize further topic talk. Throughout, belief formulations show themselves to be a method by which we get to know ourselves and each other as mental agents.
Thesauri have long been recognized as valuable structured resources aiding Information Retrieval systems. A thesaurus provides a precise and controlled vocabulary which serves to coordinate data indexing and retrieval. The paper presents a bilingual Greek and English specialized thesaurus that is being developed as the backbone of a platform aimed at enhancing and enriching the cultural experiences of visitors in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. The cultural component of the intended platform comprises textual data, images of artifacts and living entities (animals and plants in the area), as well as audio and video. The thesaurus covers the domains of Archaeology, Literature, Mythology, and Travel; therefore, it can be viewed as a set of inter-linked thesauri. Where applicable, terms and names in the database are also geo-referenced.
This paper aims at verifying if the most important online Brazilian Portuguese dictionaries include some of the neologisms identified in texts published in the 1990s to 2000s, formed with the elements ciber-, e-, bio-, eco- and narco, which we refer to as fractomorphemes / fracto-morphèmes. Three online dictionaries were analyzed (Aulete, Houaiss and Michaelis), as well as Vocabulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa (VOLP). We were able to conclude that all three dictionaries and VOLP include neologisms with these elements; Michaelis and VOLP do not include separate entries for bound morphemes, whereas Houaiss includes entries for all of them and Aulete includes entries for bio-, eco- and narco-. Aulete also describes the neological meaning of eco- and narco-, whereas Houaiss does not.

Die folgende Analyse trägt der Zentralität des Führerkonzepts während des Nationalsozialismus Rechnung und skizziert – orientiert an der leitenden Akteurseinteilung in zentrale Repräsentanten des NS-Apparats, verschiedene Akteursgruppen der integrierten Gesellschaft und der Ausgeschlossenen sowie Akteure des Widerstands – ein differenziertes Bild des zeitgenössischen Sprachgebrauchs und der unterschiedlichen Verwendungsweisen des Führerkonzepts. Führer wird als nationalsozialistisches Leitkonzept konturiert, das eng mit weiteren Leitkonzepten wie Volk, Nation und Reich verknüpft war. Es besaß einerseits hohe integrative und affektive Kraft, diente andererseits – auf Seiten der Ausgeschlossenen, Dissidenten und des Widerstands – als Einsatzpunkt von Distanzierung und Kritik.
Heranwachsen in einem noch fremden Land: Die Studie beruht auf einer mehr als 20 Jahre umfassenden Langzeiterhebung in russlanddeutschen Familien mit insgesamt 16 Kindern. Schwerpunkt der Beobachtungen und Interviews war die jeweilige Situation der Kinder innerhalb und außerhalb der Familie. Wie veränderte sie sich aus der Sicht der Kinder und ihrer Angehörigen über die Jahre ab der Ankunft in Deutschland bis zum Übergang ins Berufsleben? Welche Bilanz ziehen die nunmehr jungen Erwachsenen ein Vierteljahrhundert nach ihrer Ankunft?
Die Autorinnen ordnen die individuellen Bilanzen in die internationale Migrations- und Integrationsforschung ein. Die deutsch-russische Zweisprachigkeit als Kern der Mehrsprachigkeit der StudienteilnehmerInnen wird in ihrer Beschaffenheit durch Diskursanalysen und deutschsprachige C-Tests beschrieben und zu den Deutschqualifikationen junger Erwachsener ohne Migrationshintergrund ins Verhältnis gesetzt. Die sprachlichen Qualifikationen erfahren so die ihnen gebührende Aufmerksamkeit. Sie sind Bedingung und Folge gesellschaftlicher Zugehörigkeit.
Gegenstand des nachfolgenden Beitrags sind emotionale Positionierungen. Auf der Grundlage dieser Egodokumente, die 1934 entstanden sind und die von den Jahren vom Ersten Weltkrieg bis zum Jahr 1934, mit der Kernzeit der Weimarer Republik, erzählen, wird nach der Funktion von Gefühlsthematisierungen gefragt. Dabei wird vorausgesetzt, dass gerade in der sogenannten »Bewegungsphase« der NSDAP, der Phase des Aufstiegs zwischen Mitte der 1920er Jahre bis zur Machtübergabe 1933, bei aller Politisierung der Akteure dennoch Emotion und Affekt von großer, den Nationalsozialismus stabilisierender Bedeutung waren. Der nachfolgende emotionsgeschichtlich orientierte Versuch wird also auf der Grundlage retrospektiver sprachlicher Konstituierungen seitens der NSDAP-Mitglieder nach 1933 rekonstruiert. Sie formulieren diese Retrospektiven nach dem aus ihrer Sicht erfolgreichen Ende des »Kampfes«.
Um die mit dem Ausdruck Volksgemeinschaft gegebene Handlungsanleitung auf sprachlicher Ebene nachzuzeichnen und in diesem Zusammenhang auch die Dynamik des Gemeinschaftsbegriffs zwischen 1933 und 1945 einzufangen, beschreiten wir methodisch den Weg, die Kotextprofile über die morphosyntaktische Einbettung und damit über die Kontextualisierung des Ausdrucks zu erfassen. Akteursbezogen werden dabei diejenigen Handlungsmuster relevant, in denen das Konzept der Volksgemeinschaft besprochen, behauptet oder beschworen wird. Aufgrund der semantischen Polyvalenz der Wortbildung Volksgemeinschaft und ihrer hohen Reichweite in alle gesellschaftliche Bereiche wird für eine textnahe Interpretation erhoben, zu welchen Themenbereichen die unter dem Gemeinschaftsgedanken verhandelten Gegenstände gehören (z. B. Sport, Architektur, Fahrten etc.), aber auch, wie sich der einzelne oder das Kollektiv in diese Wissens- und Handlungsfelder einschreiben.
Between January 2020 and July 2021, many new words and phrases contributed to the expansion of the German vocabulary to enable communication under the new conditions that evolved during the Covid-19 pandemic. Medical and epidemiological vocabulary was integrated into the general language to a large extent. Suddenly, some lexemes from general language were used with very high frequency, while other words were used less often than before. These processes of language change can be studied in various ways, for example, in corpus linguistics with respect to the frequency or emergence of certain words in certain types of texts (e.g. press releases vs. posts in social media), in critical discourse analysis with respect to certain participants of the discourse (e.g. vocabulary of Covid-19 pandemic deniers), or in conversation analysis (e.g. with respect to new verbal interactions in greetings and farewells). The rapid expansion of vocabulary has notably affected also lexicography as a discipline of applied linguistics.
This article will focus on the ways in which a German neologism dictionary project has chosen to capture and document lexicographic information in a timely manner. Both challenges and advantages arise from lexicographic practice “at the pulse of time”. The Neologismenwörterbuch is presented as an example that lends itself well to such a discussion because its subject (neologisms) is characterized as new, innovative, and constantly changing.
Die nachfolgende Konzeptbeschreibung ist ein Beitrag zur »linguistischen Anthropologie« (vgl. den so betitelten Aufsatz von Fritz Hermanns 1994) zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Es geht um »sprachgeprägte Menschenbilder« (Hermanns 1994: 37). Wir rekonstruieren Zuschreibungen von »Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen« (ebd., auch 46). Es handelt sich im Sinn sprachlicher Praktiken um Stereotypisierungen, die sich durch die Kontextualisierung von »kategoriengebundenen Merkmalen« (vgl. Stocker 2005: 74–81) und Geschlechts- bzw. Generationenbezeichnungen ausdrücken.
Die Arbeit wurde vom Verein für Gesprächsforschung mit dem Dissertationsförderpreis 2020 ausgezeichnet.
Bis heute gehört die Frage, wie InteraktionsteilnehmerInnen verstehen, welche von mehreren möglichen Lesarten eines sprachlichen Formats im jeweiligen Kontext gilt, zu den größten Herausforderungen der Konversationsanalyse. Aufbauend auf den Erkenntnissen über soziales Handeln in der Interaktion in Sprechakttheorie und Konversationsanalyse beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit dem Verhältnis zwischen rekurrenten sprachlichen Formaten und sozialen Handlungen. Im Fokus stehen interrogative und deklarative Modalverbformate: soll ich...?, kannst du...?, willst/magst/möchtest du...?, du kannst... und ich kann...
Eine umfassende, korpusdatengestützte Untersuchung zu diesen Formaten im Deutschen fehlte bisher. In der Forschung zu anderen Sprachen wurden vergleichbare Formate eingehender untersucht, aber fast ausschließlich in Bezug auf direktiv-kommissive Handlungen, wie Bitten, Aufforderungen, Angebote, Vorschläge etc., während das breitere Handlungsspektrum und -potenzial der Formate nicht aufgezeigt wurde.
Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt auf,
1. welches Handlungsspektrum die untersuchten Formate aufweisen,
2. wie die Komposition eines Turns, dessen Position (i.e., in der laufenden Sequenz, in der Interaktion, in der Aktivität oder in der Interaktionsgeschichte) sowie weitere kontextuelle Faktoren (wie z.B. die Verteilung von epistemischen und deontischen Rechten) dazu beitragen, wie das Format als diese oder jene Handlung in der Interaktion verstanden wird, und
3. welches Handlungspotenzial bzw. welche globale Handlungsbedeutung das jeweilige Format aufweist.
Die Untersuchung bedient sich der Methodik der Konversationsanalyse und der Interaktionalen Linguistik und beruht auf mehr als 500 Belegen aus Videoaufnahmen natürlicher Interaktion aus dem FOLK-Korpus.
Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt, welche Handlungen mit den untersuchten Formaten vollzogen werden und welche Rolle unterschiedliche Faktoren (wie die Position des Turns, die Verteilung von deontischen und epistemischen Rechten, und die Verantwortung für das Projekt, auf das sich die Handlung bezieht, das Agens der künftigen Handlung, das nonverbale Verhalten von Interagierenden während der Realisierung des fokalen Turns etc.) dafür spielen, wie das jeweilige Format verstanden wird. Überdies wird nachgewiesen, welche weiteren linguistischen Merkmale (wie z.B. Vorkommen von Adverbien und Modal- bzw. Abtönungspartikeln, Argumentrealisierung, Wortfolge, Semantik des Vollverbs etc.) zusätzlich zum Modalverbformat für Handlungskonstitution und -zuschreibung relevant sein können und wann. Somit werden Faktoren herausgearbeitet, die für die weitere Entwicklung des Konzeptes ‚Format für soziale Handlungen‘ notwendig sind.
Die Arbeit zeigt, dass eine umfassende Analyse des gesamten Handlungsspektrums der Verwendung sprachlicher Formen auf Basis eines großen Korpus notwendig ist, um die für bestimmte Handlungsfunktionen relevanten Realisierungs- und Kontextbedingungen korrekt identifizieren zu können und vorschnellen Schlüssen über die Assoziation von linguistischen Formaten mit bestimmten Handlungen vorzubeugen. Trotz unterschiedlicher feingranularer Funktionen der Formate ist allerdings stets eine Kernbedeutung feststellbar, die zum Handlungspotenzial des jeweiligen Formats beiträgt.
Head alignment in German compounds: Implications for prosodic constituency and morphological parsing

The notion of head alignment was introduced to account for the observation that in a word with multiple feet, one is more prominent than the others. In particular, this notion is meant to capture the characteristic edge-orientation of main stress by requiring the (left or right) word boundary and the respective (left or right) boundary of the head foot to coincide (McCarthy & Prince 1993). In the present paper the notion of head alignment will be applied to compounds, which are also characterized by the property that one of their members, located in a margin position, is most prominent.
The adequacy of an analysis in terms of head alignment hinges on the question of whether observable prominence peaks associate with the boundaries of independently motivated constituents. It will be argued that such links exist for German compounds, indicating reference to at least three distinct compound categories established on morphological grounds: copulative, phrasal, and a default class of “regular” compounds. The evidence for the relevant distinctions sheds light on morphological parsing, indicating that compound categories can be – and often are – determined by properties pertaining to their complete form, rather than by conditions affecting their (original) construction.
The question of whether a letter is a grapheme or not is a perennial issue in writing research. The answer depends on which criteria are used to differentiate between letters and graphemes and, ultimately,how the unit ‘grapheme’ is defined. This problem is particularly relevant to complex graphemes, i.e. sequences of letters that behave like a single grapheme in certain respects. Typical for German is the ‹ch›. This paper argues for a scalar concept of graphemes, which compares the grapheme status of each of the units under investigation. For this purpose, new criteria for the identification of complex graphemes are used, which originate from handwriting analysis. There, it is shown that complex graphemes are connected with each other disproportionately often and also have deviating letter forms disproportionately often.
This paper presents the main issues connected with the creation of a trilingual Hungarian-Italian-English dictionary of the COVID-19 pandemic using Lexonomy. My aim is not only to create a coronacorpus (in Hungarian, I propose my own corona-neologism or ‘coroneologism’: koronakorpusz) and a dictionary of equivalents, but also to understand how the different waves and phases of the COVID-19 pandemic are changing the Hungarian language, detect the Corona-, COVID-, pandemic-, virus-, mask-, quarantine-, and vaccine-related neologisms, and offer an overview of the most frequent or linguistically interesting Hungarian neologisms and multiword units related to COVID-19.
This chapter will present lessons learned from CLARIN-D, the German CLARIN national consortium. Members of the CLARIN-D communities and of the CLARIN-D consortium have been engaged in innovative, data-driven, and community-based research, using language resources and tools in the humanities and neigh-bouring disciplines. We will present different use cases and users’ stories that demonstrate the innovative research potential of large digital corpora and lexical resources for the study of language change and variation, for language documentation, for literary studies, and for the social sciences. We will emphasize the added value of making language resources and tools available in the CLARIN distributed research infrastructure and will discuss legal and ethical issues that need to be addressed in the use of such an infrastructure. Innovative technical solutions for accessing digital materials still under copyright and for data mining such materials will be presented. We will outline the need for close interaction with communities of interest in the areas of curriculum development, data management, and training the next generation of digital humanities scholars. The importance of community-supported standards for encoding language resources and the practice of community-based quality control for digital research data will be presented as a crucial step toward the provisioning of high quality research data. The chapter will conclude with a discussion of impor-tant directions for innovative research and for supporting infrastructure development over the next decade and beyond.
The aim of this paper is to show how lexicographical choices reflect ideological thinking, singled out by Eagleton (2007) into the strategies of rationalizing, legitimating, action orienting, unifying, naturalizing and universalizing. It will be carried out by examining two twenty first century editions of each of the five English monolingual learner’s dictionaries published by Cambridge, Collins, Longman, Macmillan, and Oxford. The synchronic and diachronic analyses of the dictionaries and their different editions at the macro structural level (the wordlists) and at the micro structural level (the definitional styles) will show how the reduction and change of data, derived from heterogeneous social and cultural contexts of language use, to abstract essential forms, involves decisions about the central and peripheral aspects of the lexicon and the meaning of words.
We address the task of distinguishing implicitly abusive sentences on identity groups (“Muslims contaminate our planet”) from other group-related negative polar sentences (“Muslims despise terrorism”). Implicitly abusive language are utterances not conveyed by abusive words (e.g. “bimbo” or “scum”). So far, the detection of such utterances could not be properly addressed since existing datasets displaying a high degree of implicit abuse are fairly biased. Following the recently-proposed strategy to solve implicit abuse by separately addressing its different subtypes, we present a new focused and less biased dataset that consists of the subtype of atomic negative sentences about identity groups. For that task, we model components that each address one facet of such implicit abuse, i.e. depiction as perpetrators, aspectual classification and non-conformist views. The approach generalizes across different identity groups and languages.
Dieses aus zwei Teilbänden bestehende Werk folgt der Leitidee einer sprachlichen Sozialgeschichte des Nationalsozialismus. Berücksichtigt werden jeweils ebenso die sprachlich-kommunikativen Praktiken des NS-Apparats und der NS-Affinen wie der Ausgeschlossenen und Widerstandsmitglieder vor dem Hintergrund relevanter Diskurse. Der Schwerpunkt in diesem ersten Teilband liegt auf der Beschreibung der Praktiken, die kennzeichnend sind für das kommunikative Verhalten im Nationalsozialismus, insbesondere die Praktik der Inklusion/Exklusion zur Herstellung von Gemeinschaft, ebenso wie situationsspezifische Formen des Agierens (wie z.B. sich beschweren) und Interagierens (wie z.B. im Zuge des Prozesses gegen die Widerstandskämpfer des 20. Juli).
Dieses aus zwei Teilbänden bestehende Werk folgt der Leitidee einer sprachlichen Sozialgeschichte des Nationalsozialismus. Berücksichtigt werden jeweils ebenso die sprachlich-kommunikativen Praktiken des NS-Apparats und der NS-Affinen wie der Ausgeschlossenen und Widerstandsmitglieder vor dem Hintergrund relevanter Diskurse. Der Schwerpunkt in diesem zweiten Teilband liegt auf der Darstellung der Nutzung einiger zentraler Kommunikationsformen/Textsorten (Tagebuch, Brief, Postkarte, Denk- und Flugschrift, Rede) und der Frage danach, wie Texttraditionen modifiziert werden. Hier werden Diskursverdichtungen (›Arbeit‹, ›Blut‹, ›Freiheit‹ u.a.m) aufbereitet, die das Denken, Fühlen, Sollen und Wollen der NS-Zeit ideologisch bestimmten.
The CLARIN Concept Registry (CCR) is the common semantic ground for most CMDI-based profiles to describe language-related resources in the CLARIN universe. While the CCR supports semantic interoperability within this universe, it does not extend beyond it. The flexibility of CMDI, however, allows users to use other term or concept registries when defining their metadata components. In this paper, we describe our use of schema.org, a light ontology used by many parties across disciplines.
One central goal of the project ‘Zentrum für digitale Lexikographie der deutschen Sprache’ (Center for digital lexicography for the German Language, www.zdl.org) is to provide a corpus-based lexicographic component of common German multi-word expressions (MWE), including idioms, for DWDS (www.dwds.de), a general language dictionary of contemporary German. As a central challenge of this task, we have identified an adequate lexicographic representation of such common properties of MWE as variation and modification. To document the variation, we have developed a special entry-clustering model, which we call hub-node entry. This model comprises a core hub entry headed by a short nuclear form of the MWE and several node entries, which represent the most common variants in their full lexical forms.
We describe the status of work intending at including sign language lexical data within the OntoLex-Lemon framework. Our general goal is to provide for a multimodal extension to this framework, which was originally conceived for covering only the written and phonetic representation of lexical data. Our aim is to achieve in the longer term the same type of semantic interoperability between sign language lexical data as this is achieved for their spoken or written counterparts. We want also to achieve this goal across modalities: between sign language lexical data and spoken/written lexical data.
In this paper, we present LexMeta, a metadata model for the description of human-readable and computational lexical resources in catalogues. Our initial motivation is the extension of the LexBib knowledge graph with the addition of metadata for dictionaries, making it a catalogue of and about lexicographical works. The scope of the proposed model, however, is broader, aiming at the exchange of metadata with catalogues of Language Resources and Technologies and addressing a wider community of researchers besides lexicographers. For the definition of the LexMeta core classes and properties, we deploy widely used RDF vocabularies, mainly Meta-Share, a metadata model for Language Resources and Technologies, and FRBR, a model for bibliographic records.
In this article we examine moments in which parents or other caregivers overtly invoke rules during episodes in which they take issue with, intervene against, and try to change a child’s ongoing behavior or action(s). Drawing on interactional data from four different languages (English, Finnish, German, Polish) and using Conversation Analytic methods, we first illustrate the variety of ways in which parents may use such overt rule invocations as part of their behavior modification attempts, showing them to be functionally versatile interactional objects. Their interactional flexibility notwithstanding, we find that parents typically invoke rules when, in the course of the intervention episode, they encounter trouble with achieving an acceptable compliant outcome. To get at the distinct import of rule formulations in this context, we then compare them to two sequential alternatives: parental expressions of an experienced negative affective state, and parental threats. While the former emphasize aspects of social solidarity, the latter seek to enforce compliance by foregrounding a power asymmetry between the parent and the child. Rule formulations, by contrast, are designedly impersonal and appear to be directed at what the parents construe as shortcomings in common-sense practical reasoning on the child’s part. Reflexively, the child is thereby cast as not having properly applied common-sense ‘practical reason’ when engaging in what is treated as the problematic behavior or action. Overt rule invocations can, therefore, be understood as indexical appeals to practical reason.
Die Integration englischer er-Personenbezeichnungen ins System der deutschen Nomina agentis geht aufgrund struktureller Parallelen scheinbar schnell vonstatten. Auffällig, aber in bestehenden Untersuchungen unberücksichtigt, ist jedoch die (Nicht-)Movierung der Entlehnungen (Sharon ist Manager neben Managerin). Eine Fragebogenstudie mit zwölf prädikativen Konstruktionen, die sich auf weibliche Individuen beziehen, zeigt zunächst, dass Movierung für die meisten Teilnehmenden (ca. ¾) der Normalfall ist. Nur zwei Personen movieren nie. Bei den Teilnehmenden mit schwankender Movierung lässt sich kein Einfluss der Faktoren Geschlecht, Alter und Herkunft der Teilnehmenden sowie Geschlechterstereotyp des Lexems nachweisen. Einfluss auf die Variation haben dagegen der Fremdwortstatus (native Lexeme werden tendenziell eher moviert als Anglizismen), die Gebrauchsfrequenz (frequentere Lexeme werden tendenziell eher moviert als weniger frequente) und die Länge des Lexems (kürzere Lexeme werden tendenziell eher moviert als längere). Die statistische Untersuchung wird von kleineren qualitativen Beobachtungen aus den erhobenen Antworten und aus anderen Datenquellen (v.a. Korpora) ergänzt.

In darauf aufbauender, aber auch sich davon differenzierender Art und Weise, findet das Konzept Kampf ebenso im politischen Diskurs des Nationalsozialismus Anwendung. Während im Zweiten Weltkrieg vor allem die Bedeutung von ›Kampf als Gefecht‹ im militärischen Kontext hervorgebracht wurde, sind die Verwendungen von ›Kampf als Bemühung‹, ›Kampf als Engagement‹ bis hin zu ›Kampf als Heroismus‹ (vgl. Klemperer 2018: 13), verknüpft mit ›Kampf als Kontroverse‹, vordergründig für das Verständnis der politischen Bedeutung des Kampfkonzepts im Nationalsozialismus. Im Folgenden werden nach einer einführenden begriffsgeschichtlichen Betrachtung ausgehend von diskursiv realisierten Wortformen der Lexeme Kampf und kämpfen konzeptkonstituierende Gebrauchsweisen für die verschiedenen Akteursklassen NS-Apparat, integrierte Gesellschaft, Ausgeschlossene und Widerstand dargelegt.
Das Ziel des Beitrags ist es, die Merkmale von Kommunikationsstörungen in Sport-Interviews aus Sicht der Interviewten festzustellen und zu analysieren. Die empirische Forschungsbasis besteht aus ukrainisch- und deutschsprachigen Videointerviews aus den Jahren 2010 bis 2019, die entweder im Fernsehen gesendet oder für YouTube produziert wurden. Die Ergebnisse der Studie ermöglichten es, die charakteristischen Merkmale von Abweichungen als Kommunikationsstörungen in Sport-Interviews auf drei Ebenen der kommunikativen Gattung zu identifizieren: auf der außenstrukturellen, binnenstrukturellen und situativen Ebene. Sowohl gemeinsame Merkmale von Kommunikationsstörungen als auch Unterschiede in den ukrainisch- und deutschsprachigen Sport-Interviews wurden bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass die Arten von Kommunikationsstörungen in Sport-Interviews im Ukrainischen und Deutschen universell sind, sie spiegeln jedoch die nationalen und kulturellen Besonderheiten angesichts der Merkmale beider Sprachen und jeder Sprachkultur wider.
