Der vorliegende Aufsatz widmet sich zwei Kategorien der traditionellen (deutschen) Grammatik: dem Aufforderungssatz, einer der fünf klassischen Satzarten, und dem Imperativ, einer Verbform, die als typisch für Aufforderungssätze gilt. Er greift Beobachtungen aus der jüngeren Fachliteratur auf, die ein zunehmendes Unbehagen mit beiden Kategorien erkennen lassen. In morphologischer Hinsicht zeigt sich, dass nur wenige deutsche Verben eine eindeutige Imperativform besitzen. Manche Verben besitzen keine Imperativform. Bei der Mehrzahl der Verben besteht Homonymie zwischen Imperativformen und Konjunktivformen der 3. Person Singular. Imperativformen werden durch Konjunktivformen verdrängt. In syntaktischer Hinsicht wird argumentiert, dass Imperativsyntagmen keine Satzform haben. Satzförmige Ausdrücke mit Konjunktivformen, die für auffordernde Handlungen stehen, können als Wunschsätze kategorisiert werden. Als Aufforderungssätze bleiben zwei Klassen von Syntagmen im Grenzbereich zwischen nicht-satzförmigen und satzförmigen Ausdrücken übrig, die besondere Eigenschaften hinsichtlich Subjektbesetzung und Subjekt-Verb-Kongruenz zeigen.
Der Beitrag betrachtet movierbare Personenbezeichnungen, die in einem Prädikativum mit Bezug auf ein weibliches Subjekt gebraucht werden (Typ sie ist Käufer/Käuferin). In solchen Fällen ist neben der Verwendung der movierten Personenbezeichnung auch die ihrer maskulinen Basis möglich, wobei zum tatsächlichen Gebrauch der beiden Varianten bisher widersprüchliche Angaben und kaum Daten vorlagen. Diese Untersuchung ergibt, dass die Movierung in der Prädikativkonstruktion seit dem Ahd. der Normalfall war und ist. Allerdings lassen sich einige Nischen ausmachen, in denen unmovierte Bezeichnungen etwas frequenter sind: Der mit Abstand höchste Wert findet sich bei weiblicher Selbstreferenz, während Maskulina bei weiblichen Subjekten der dritten Person Singular mit einer Ausnahme weitgehend unüblich sind. Diese Ausnahme ist der offizielle Sprachgebrauch der damaligen DDR. Öffentlichkeitsgerichtete Texte des 20./21. Jh., die nicht aus der DDR stammen, zeigen einen vermutlich gesellschaftlich bedingten Rückgang der sowieso schon seltenen unmovierten Formen ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre.
The question of whether a letter is a grapheme or not is a perennial issue in writing research. The answer depends on which criteria are used to differentiate between letters and graphemes and, ultimately,how the unit ‘grapheme’ is defined. This problem is particularly relevant to complex graphemes, i.e. sequences of letters that behave like a single grapheme in certain respects. Typical for German is the ‹ch›. This paper argues for a scalar concept of graphemes, which compares the grapheme status of each of the units under investigation. For this purpose, new criteria for the identification of complex graphemes are used, which originate from handwriting analysis. There, it is shown that complex graphemes are connected with each other disproportionately often and also have deviating letter forms disproportionately often.
In contrast to printed letters, handwritten texts show a larger amount of variation regarding letter shape and letter contact. This variation though might not be totally random but could follow a certain grammatical or structural function. By analysing a corpus of 10.117 graphs written by four writers, this paper explores which structures and which functions correlate. More precisely, it will be shown that the shape of certain letters might indicate syllabic, morphologic od prosodic structures. In addition, it will be shown that handwritten texts present the words’ structure better than printed texts could do. Overall, this paper points out how handwritten scripts show the graphematic principles known from printing even better than printed texts do.
The article aims to examine grammatical features and pragmatic concerns of communicating in the Sciences. In the research of certain languages, it became common to explaingrammatical features such as the usage of passive voice and nominal structures by communication requirements such as objectivity and precision. With the assumption that communication in Science is designed to help gain and spread new insight, the authors tried to integrateseveral approaches to pragmatic and grammatical features of communication. By discussing therelationship between the grammar of certain languages and of the corresponding commonlanguage, the article also places the subject of communication in the Sciences in the discipline oflanguage Variation.
In English, past tense stative clauses embedded under a past-marked attitude verb, like Eric thought that Kalina was sick, can receive two interpretations, differing on when the state of the complement is understood to hold, i.e. Kalina’s sickness precedes the time of Eric’s thinking (backward-shifted reading), or Kalina is sick at the time of Eric’s thinking (simultaneous reading). As is well known, the availability of the simultaneous reading—also called Sequence of tense (SOT)—is subject to cross-linguistic variation. Non-SOT languages only allow for the backward-shifted interpretation. This cross-linguistic variation has been analysed in two main ways in the literature: a structural approach, connecting the availability of the simultaneous reading in a language to a syntactic mechanism that allows the embedded past not to be interpreted; and an implicature approach, which links the absence of such a reading to the presence of a “cessation” implicature associated with past tense. We report a series of experiments on Polish, which is commonly classified as a non-SOT language. First, we investigate the interpretation of complement clauses embedded under past-marked attitude verbs in Polish and English. This investigation revealed a difference between these two languages in the availability of simultaneous interpretations for past-under-past complement clauses, albeit not as large as a binary distinction between SOT and non-SOT languages would lead us to expect. We then address the question of whether the lower acceptability we observe for simultaneous readings in Polish might be due to an embedded cessation implicature. On the way to address this question, we show that in simple matrix clauses, Polish gives rise to the same cessation inference as English. Then we investigate Polish past-under-past sentences in positive and negative contexts, comparing their potential cessation implicature to the exclusive implicature of disjunction. In our results, we found that the latter was endorsed more often in positive than in negative contexts, as expected, while the cessation implicature was endorsed overall very little, with no difference across contexts. The disanalogy between the disjunction and the temporal cases, and the insensitivity of the latter to monotonicity, are a challenge for the implicature approach, and cast doubts on associating SOT phenomena with implicatures.
In Fachsprache 1–2/2011 Czicza and Hennig proposed a model that explains correlations between grammatical features and pragmatic conditions in communication in sciences. This model now serves as a basis for the practical analysis of the scientific degree of any written text. The authors present a method of analyzing written texts concerning the four parameters ‚economy’‚ precision’, ‚impersonalization’ and ‚discussion’. The method is being developed by the analysis of a prototypical scientific article on the one hand and a non-scientific text on the other hand. The two texts serve as the two poles of the scale of scientificity. Finally, the applicability of the model and its operationalization is being illustrated by the analysis of two examples of texts that are located between the two poles (one popular scientific text and one juridical teaching article).
In semantic fieldwork, it is common to use a language other than the language under investigation for presenting linguistic materials to the language consultants, e.g. discourse contexts in acceptability judgment tasks. Previous works commenting on the use of a ‘meta-language’ or ‘language of wider communication’ in this sense (AnderBois and Henderson 2015; Matthewson 2004) have argued that this practice is not methodologically inferior to the exclusive use of the object language for elicitation, but that the fieldworker needs to be alert to potential influences of the meta-language or, indeed, the object language, on the elicited judgments. Thus, the choice of a language for presenting discourse contexts is an integral component of fieldwork methodology. This paper provides a research report with a focus on this component. It describes a multilingual fieldwork setting offering several potential meta-languages, which the fieldworker and the consultants master to varying degrees. The choice of the languages in this setting is discussed with regard to methodological, social and practical considerations and related to selected, more general methodological questions regarding semantic fieldwork practice.
