Objekte in wechselnder Beleuchtung. Regional- und Minderheitensprachen in West- und Mitteleuropa
(1999)
In our individualized society the individual by using a language has to take care of
surviving in a globalized world and of symbolizing his cultural identity at the same
time. For german speaking people this has conserquences as to the use of English as
an international language, of German as one of the national languages which reprensent
the variety of European culture and of regional idioms. The latter are used
partly as a normal means of communication, partly as a regional symbol of identity.
In this paper ways are scetched, how these questions can be dealt with by sociolinguistics.
