Neben den wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen, die nach den Qualitätskriterien
der heute üblichen doppelt anonymen Begutachtung ausgewählt wurden, enthält das Heft drei Berichte – zu einer Tagung zur Mehrsprachigkeit in Tartu, zu einem interdisziplinären DaF-Projekt in Tallinn sowie zu einer Forschungsgruppe zu Sprachkompetenzen und Deutschlernmotivationen von Student/innen in den baltischen und nordischen Ländern. Das Heft wird schließlich durch zwei Rezensionen abgerundet.
Validating the Performativity Hypothesis to Neg-Raising using corpus data: Evidence from Polish

This report presents a corpus of articulations recorded with Schlieren photography, a recording technique to visualize aeroflow dynamics for two purposes. First, as a means to investigate aerodynamic processes during speech production without any obstruction of the lips and the nose. Second, to provide material for lecturers of phonetics to illustrates these aerodynamic processes. Speech production was recorded with 10 kHz frame rate for statistical video analyses. Downsampled videos (500 Hz) were uplodad to a youtube channel for illustrative purposes. Preliminary analyses demonstrate potential in applying Schlieren photography in research.
This paper investigates the use of linking adverbs in adversative constructions in German and Italian. In Italian those constructions are very frequently formulated with adverbs such as invece, while wordings without a lexical connective are more typical of German. Corpus data show that the syntactic und semantic conditions favouring the use of adversative adverbs are by and large the same in both languages. Lexical connectives can increase explicitness when the intended adversative interpretation is not obvious on other grounds. The higher frequency of adversative adverbs in Italian is shown to be a consequence of the more restrictive rules of the placement of prosodic accent.
Die Vernetzung von Computern bewirkt die Entstehung eines Netzes aus Texten und, als Folge davon, sozialen Netzen von Nutzern dieser Texte als Schreibern und Lesern. Netzwerke sprachlicher Objekte gab und gibt es zwar auch ohne Digitalisierung und Vernetzung, jedoch weniger umfangreich und wesentlich schwerer, möglicherweise gar nicht in großer Menge analysierbar. Der vorliegende Beitrag befasst sich mit den verschiedenen Typen sprachlicher Netzwerke: Textgeweben, Interaktionsnetzwerken und sozialen Netzwerken. Es werden zentrale Begrifflichkeiten der Netzwerkanalyse erläutert und anhand von Beispielen gezeigt, wie sprachliche Kommunikation auf der Grundlage der Methoden der Netzwerkanalyse aus einer anderen, neuen Perspektive betrachtet werden kann.
Verbs may be attributed to higher agency than other grammatical categories. In Study 1, we confirmed this hypothesis with archival datasets comprising verbs (N = 950) and adjectives (N = 2115). We then investigated whether verbs (vs. adjectives) increase message effectiveness. In three experiments presenting potential NGOs (Studies 2 and 3) or corporate campaigns (Study 4) in verb or adjective form, we demonstrate the hypothesized relationship. Across studies, (overall N = 721) grammatical agency consistently increased message effectiveness. Semantic agency varied across contexts by either increasing (Study 2), not affecting (Study 3), or decreasing (Study 4) the effectiveness of the message. Overall, experiments provide insights in to the meta-semantic effects of verbs – demonstrating how grammar may influence communication outcomes.

This chapter discusses functions of the German language in the Linguistic Landscape (LL) of the Baltic states, with a focus on the Latvian capital Riga. For this end, it applies the "Spot German" approach (cf. Heimrath 2017) in the context of debates on the international role of German (cf. Ammon 2015). It argues that German is an "additional language of society" (cf. Marten 2017b), i.e. it is not a dominant language in the Baltics but can regularly be found in a variety of functions. These relate both to the historical role of German in the region (including its contemporary commodification) and to current relations between the Baltics and the German-speaking countries. These include tourism, business, or educational and political institutions, but also point to, e.g., discourses on the quality assigned to products from the German-speaking region. In this sense, the Baltic states are part of what may, in accordance with Kachru's (1985) 3-circle-model for English, be labelled as "extended circle" of German. At the same time, the chapter discusses how conclusions from Linguistic Landscape research can be used for understanding marketing both in and for the German language: On the one hand, German carries the potential of persuading customers to opt for a certain product. On the other hand, the abundance of situations where German can be "spotted" suggests that the LL may successfully be used for language-marketing purposes, as exemplified by a brochure and a poster created by the DAAD Information Centre for the Baltic states in Riga.
