The prohibitive is typically defined as the negative imperative, i.e. it “implies making someone not do something, having the effect of forbidding, preventing, or restricting” (Aikhenvald, 2017: 3). This chapter focuses on the formation of the prohibitive in the languages of Daghestan and neighboring regions, analyzing two different aspects of the morphological coding: first, the verb form (especially whether it is an imperative form or not), and second, the type of negation marker/affix used. Based on this, the general encoding types are deduced. Additionally, the phonological form of the markers is shortly analyzed.
In der Korpuslinguistik und der Quantitativen Linguistik werden ganz verschiedenartige formale Maße verwendet, mit denen die Gebrauchshäufigkeit eines Wortes, eines Ausdrucks oder auch abstrakter oder komplexer sprachlicher Elemente in einem gegebenen Korpus gemessen und ggf. mit anderen Gebrauchshäufigkeiten verglichen werden kann. Im Folgenden soll für eine Auswahl dieser Maße (absolute Häufigkeit, relative Häufigkeit, Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung, Differenzenkoeffizient, Häufigkeitsklasse) zusammengefasst werden, wie sie definiert sind, welche Eigenschaften sie haben und unter welchen Bedingungen sie (sinnvoll) anwendbar und interpretierbar sind – dabei kann eine Rolle spielen, ob das Häufigkeitsmaß auf ein Korpus als Ganzes angewendet wird oder auf einzelne Teilkorpora. Zusätzlich zu den bei den einzelnen Häufigkeitsmaßen genannten Einschränkungen gilt generell der folgende vereinfachte Zusammenhang: Je seltener ein Wort im gegebenen Korpus insgesamt vorkommt und je kleiner dieses Korpus ist, desto stärker hängt die beobachtete Gebrauchshäufigkeit des Wortes von zufälligen Faktoren ab, d.h., desto geringer ist die statistische Zuverlässigkeit der Beobachtung.
The NottDeuYTSch corpus contains over 33 million words taken from approximately 3 million YouTube comments from videos published between 2008 to 2018 targeted at a young, German-speaking demographic and represents an authentic language snapshot of young German speakers. The corpus was proportionally sampled based on video category and year from a database of 112 popular German-speaking YouTube channels in the DACH region for optimal representativeness and balance and contains a considerable amount of associated metadata for each comment that enable further longitudinal cross-sectional analyses.
Learning new languages has a high relevance in today’s society with a globalized economy and the freedom to move abroad for work, study or other reasons. In this context new methods to teach and learn languages with the help of modern technology are becoming more relevant besides traditional language classes.
This work presents a new approach to combine a traditional language class with a modern computer-based approach for teaching. As a concrete example a web application to help teach and learn Latin was developed.
You might not know what a “smombie” is, but you have certainly already met one today. In public streets and places, the so-called “smartphone zombies” regularly cross our ways. They walk slowly, in peculiar ways, their eyes and fingers focused on their smartphone displays. While some cities have already introduced specific walking lanes or ground-level traffic signs for smartphone users “on the go”, it is not only road safety that is at stake. Frequently hunching over our phones causes cervical pain, we are addicted to likes on social media, and the fear of missing out prevents us from switching off our phones. If asked if mobile device use is possibly harmful to our bodies and minds, most people would spontaneously agree. Our social skills seem to constantly diminish since smartphones have become an everyday tool: we stick to them like glue while waiting for the bus, while walking, while eating, even while being with others. Will we turn into social zombies in the end?
Having the necessary skills for staying in contact with friends and relatives through digital devices is crucial in today’s world. As the current COVID-19 pandemic shows, this holds especially true for the elderly. Being quarantined and restricted from physically meeting people, various communication technologies are more important than ever for staying social and informed on current events. In nursing homes, staff members are now finding new ways for staying in touch with family members by assisting residents in making video calls with mobile devices.
But what if elderly people cannot rely on personal assistance for accessing these alternative means of communication? This raises the general question of how older people can and do learn to use such technologies. Although the internet is full of guides and instructional videos on how to use smartphones or tablets, they are a cold comfort to someone who may not even know what an internet browser is.
Especially for digital newcomers, the tried and true method of face-to-face instruction is invaluable. While many older people turn to their children or grandchildren for help in all things digital, courses specifically tailored for elderly users are also increasingly popular.
More and more governmental initiatives and associations indeed acknowledge the already existing interest of elderly citizens in digital tools and their growing need to receive customized training (e.g. “SeniorSurf” and “Kansalaisen digitaidot” in Finland or “Silver Tipps” in Germany). For a researcher of social interaction, these courses can also provide a valuable window for discovering what it looks and sounds like to learn to use essential but sometimes alien technologies.
Datenmanagement wird durch die Forschungsföderungsorganisationen (etwa in Horizon 2020 der EU, die Allianz der deutschen Wissenschaftsorganisationen oder in DFG geförderten Projekten) mehr und mehr Teil der Forschungslandschaft. Für die Computerlinguistik ist das Forschungsdatenmanagement aber auch Teil des Forschungsgebietes: Datenmodellierung und Transformation für die nachhaltige Datenspeicherung gehören in den Bereich der Texttechnologie und Textlinguistik, ebenso die Modellierung der beschreibenden Daten zu Datensätzen.

Software for corpus linguists and text/data mining enthusiasts. The CorpusExplorer combines over 45 interactive visualizations under a user-friendly interface. Routine tasks such as text acquisition, cleaning or tagging are completely automated. The simple interface supports the use in university teaching and leads users/students to fast and substantial results. The CorpusExplorer is open for many standards (XML, CSV, JSON, R, etc.) and also offers its own software development kit (SDK).
