• Im Folgenden versuche ich, eine Alternative zu Theorien zu entwickeln, die deutsche Ergänzungsfragesätze - w-Interrogativsätze - als syntaktischen Satztyp behandeln und die die lnterrogativität dieser Sätze aus einer schon im Lexikon angenommenen interrogativen Bedeutung eines im Satz gegebenen w-Lexems ableiten. Ausgehend von der Tatsache, dass viele w-Lexeme neben der interrogativen auch eine indefinite Interpretation aufweisen und dass die interrogative Interpretation nur abgeleitet werden kann, wenn das w-Lexem am Beginn des Satzes vorkommt oder wenn es primären Akzent auf seinem w-Morphem trägt, verfechte ich die Hypothese, dass w-Lexeme im Lexikon nur eine allgemeine Bedeutung haben, die zur interrogativen Interpretation durch allgemeine Regeln der Akzent- und Positionsinterpretation spezialisiert wird. Daraus leite ich den Schluß ab, dass w-Interrogativsätze einen semantischen und nicht einen syntaktischen Satztyp bilden.
• In the following article I try to develop an alternative to theories which treat German equivalents of English wh-interrogatives as being a syntactic type of sentences and which maintain that the interrogativity of these sentences results from the interrogative reading of a w-word which they assume to be given for this word in the lexicon. Starting from the fact that this reading alternates in many w-words with an indefinite reading and that the interrogative reading can only be derived if the w-word is placed at the beginning of the sentence or receives primary stress on its w-morpheme, I put forward the hypothesis that there is one general reading of w-words in the lexicon which is specialized into an interrogative reading by general rules of stress and positional interpretation. This leads me to the conclusion that w-interrogatives - i.e. sentences whith w-words displaying an interrogative reading - form a semantic rather than a syntactic sentence type.
