  • This article has two objectives. Firstly, it investigates the diversity of adnominal relative clauses in present-day German with respect to syntax, prosody and information structure, and finally semantics and pragmatics. It distinguishes four dimensions of proximity vs. remoteness between the relative clause and its nominal antecedent: positional contact vs. positional distance, hypotactic vs. paratactic linking, dependent vs. independent prosodic phrasing and restrictive vs. appositive function. In the literature on relative clauses, numerous attempts have been made to formulate restrictions on combinations of these properties. But hardly any of the postulated restrictions turns out to be empirically valid. The first conclusion reached in this paper is therefore that German relative clauses allow for much more variation than it is generally assumed. Secondly, the paper examines more closely the opposition between restrictive and appositive relative clauses. With respect to this distinction, too, numerous assumptions have been formulated which are in need of revision. It will be shown that two of the criteria widely used for explaining the difference between restrictive and appositive relative clauses are not adequate for the purpose: referential restriction of the nominal antecedent and different scopal behaviour. For an alternative approach two criteria, which have been less prominent in the literature, are taken as a starting point: the referentiality of the relative pronoun and the descriptive properties of the nominal antecedent. It will be argued that these are the crucial factors which trigger the semantic interpretation of relative clauses. Appositive interpretations are possible if the relative pronoun can be read referentially. Restrictive interpretations are possible if the nominal antecedent contains a descriptive component. In cases where both conditions are fulfilled, the relative clause can be interpreted both restrictively and appositively. A decision between the two readings must then be taken on pragmatic grounds.
