  • The regional language Low German, widespread in the northern third of Germany, is endangered in its existence. There are still a large number of speakers, but the language community has a very unfavourable age structure. For two generations, the transmission of the language within families has no longer been guaranteed, and the speaker population is severely over-aged. However, there is a very lively amateur theatre scene in northern Germany; there are around 3,000 theatre groups performing in Low German. These mostly small organisational units reach young people in particular with their offerings and open up access to the regional language for them. An online survey of amateur theatre groups conducted jointly by the Leibniz Institute for the German Language and the Institute for Low German in 2017 showed that these theatre groups can provide a stable framework for the use of Low German. Many respondents to this survey state that the opportunity to use Low German is an important motivation for them to participate in their respective theatre group.
