  • The following article is based on an ethnographic sociolinguistic study of a group of second-generation ethnic Turkish migrants in Mannheim, the “Turkish Powergirls”. The investigation focuses on the communicative style of the group and how it has developed in interaction with the environment in which its members live and with other relevant people. Style is conceptualized as an index of the cultural self-image of the group, and the stylistic changes which are observed in the course of the group development process are understood as a result of coming to terms with changed living conditions and as an indication of a changed cultural self-image. The article begins with a short sketch of the communicative style of the group, after which it focuses on German-Turkish mixed forms as a salient style characteristic which is described in its structural and functional aspects.
