  • This contribution describes the formal and functional range of the discourse particle komm ('come on') in spoken German. It will be shown that the particle has an underspecified meaning; it is always used to request or mark a change in activity and the requested activity is taken to be common ground by the speaker. It will be argued that further functions that have been attributed to the particle itself in the literature can be explained by the syntactic and sequential context. In some con-texts the beginning of a new activity is salient, while others focus the completion of an ongoing activity, depending on the linguistic material that follows or pre-cedes the particle as well as the preceding, ongoing or next relevant non-verbal actions or activities. It will also be discussed which subclass of discourse particles komm can be argued to belong to. It exhibits some features of discourse markers as well as interjections, but also lacks defining features of both categories. There-fore, it will be concluded that a classification in one of those categories must be dispensed with until further particles that have their origins in imperatives (e.g. warte, 'wait'; sag mal, 'say') have been investigated empirically as they might form a separate subclass of discourse particles.
