  • We start from the premise that the appropriateness of linguistic forms can only be judged on the basis of the context they appear in. In this study of subordinate clauses introduced by ‘weil’ (because), we use online questionnaires to examine the hypothesis that variants which do not conform to the written standard are perceived as (at least) as acceptable as written standard language variants or are at least perceived differently from these. We contrast forms of communication that are more and less oriented towards written language norms. This is done on the basis of three tasks: acceptability judgement on reception, production, and association with certain media and text types. We are able to show that the variant conforming to the written standard is consistently considered to be the most acceptable. In all three tasks, however, there are also clear and consistent effects which suggest that the different variants are judged, produced and associated differently depending on the text type.
