  • Using the example of two case studies, this article raises the question of the generalisability of knowledge about connectors and connective structures gained in a single language. The empirical topics are the topology of adverbial connectors on the one hand and the relationship between adverbial connectors (linking adverbials), subordinating conjunctions and the prepositions underlying them on the other. The methodological starting point is in each case the analysis and classification contained in the “Handbuch der deutschen Konnektoren” (HDK), i.e. a distinctly German-based approach. The aim is to show that the fine-grained analysis of a single language, such as is provided by the HDK, can profitably be adapted to other European languages, in our case English, French and, more marginally, Polish, if the framework conditions are in place, i.e. if the underlying functional comparative concepts and language-specific structural principles are observed. Then we can also expect a gain for the description of German.
