  • In this paper, I will initially outline the central research questions and objectives of my study on „absolute“ uses of modal verbs in verbal interaction, followed by some brief remarks on the research context, theory, methodology and data base. The results of the study are sketched from three perspectives: Firstly, I will show uses of modal verbs which previous research has viewed as being located between categorizations as main verbs and cases of ellipsis; secondly, I will illustrate structures with (grammatical) references to contexts; and thirdly, the focus will be on specific constructions and social action formats. The article will close with a short discussion of the findings and of the potential for including the results of interactional linguistics in the teaching of German as a Foreign Language.
