  • The use of modifying genitive phrases in German requires an adequate marking on dependent words (determiners or adjectives), sometimes in combination with a marker on the genitive noun itself. If word structure prevents such markers, a prepositional phrase with the preposition von is substituted (comparable to the English of-genitive). There are, however, several marginal cases where genitive use seems possible even though it can only be marked inadequately. The present studies aim to shed light on the frequency and distribution of such cases in large corpora. The constructions under investigation are: 1. cases where the end of an uninflected word stem of either the adjective or the genitive noun looks like a genitive suffix (pseudo-genitives); 2. cases where the determiner and the genitive noun both use weak inflection (double-weak genitives) which is insufficient for genitive marking; 3. cases where the determiner position is occupied by a prenominal genitive which cannot show agreement (double genitives). The main results are: 1. Genitive with pseudo-inflection on the adjective is widespread in German and, to a lesser extent, Austrian newspapers, but very rarely used in Switzerland. Pseudo-inflection on the genitive noun itself is overall less frequent, but used in all three countries. 2. Cases of double weak inflection play a marginal role not only in newspapers but also in internet fora, which leads us to conclude that they are neither part of standard German nor of the substandard. 3. Additional prenominal genitive attributes are extremely rare; an exhaustive search in the KoGra corpus (7 billion tokens) turned up 396 cases. Of these, almost all contain an additional adjective for genitive marking. If genitive case cannot be marked, it is almost never used. The present studies help to shed light on phenomena that are often commented upon but have been lacking usage data. They also serve to determine choice contexts for genitive variation in German (Kopf 2021a; Kopf & Bildhauer in preparation).
