  • In one of the central projects of the Department of Grammar at the IDS, Korpusgrammatik – grammatische Variation im standardsprachlichen und standardnahen Deutsch (‘Corpus Grammar – Grammatical Variation in Standard and Near-Standard German’, KoGra for short: www1.ids-mannheim.de/gra/projekte/ korpusgrammatik.html), word-formation is one of the topics currently being worked on. This work takes into account insights and questions arising from the project on the semantics of German connectors which was completed at the end of 2014. The new project relies even more heavily on corpus analyses than the project on connectors. The present article reports on the methodology and first results in two exemplary groups of cases: firstly a series of concessive subjunctors, then words ending in -falls, which belong to the adverbial connectors. The inventory and word-formation patterns resulting from its systematisation are added to using examples from the corpus, and underlying word formation processes are discussed (in contrast to the situation in the main parts of speech). The analysis shows unexpected pattern variants, which also give indications of the productivity of the word-formation processes. Finally, the variants are correlated with non-grammatical metadata, using the capabilities of the statistical tool KoGra-R.
