Summary, contextualisation, and comment: "The Power of Languages: From Family to Society"

  • Are languages a problem, or are they a resource? Sanita Martena’s book argues that they are, most of all, very personal. Language is a mean of communication, but it is also an expression and reflection of identities and biographies. Languages have practical components, but they are also fun and a source of joy. Most people sometimes play with languages, they like to joke, to compare, to reflect upon their language use and the use of languages in their environment. In the end, there are no two persons in the world whose language use and competences, whose preferences for specific expressions or ways of speaking, or whose choice of what to read or watch in which language, would be entirely identical. In all this, people try to avoid disharmony – with themselves, with their families and friends, at work, and in any societal context.
