Latvia, English in

  • This entry provides an overview of contemporary roles of English in Latvia. English is relatively new to the Latvian ecolinguistic system, with Latvian, Russian and German being the most widespread three local languages throughout history. The importance of English has, however, grown rapidly since the reestablishment of Latvian independence in 1990/1991. Today, English is learned by almost all children at school, and competences and use are high in international communication among the post-Soviet generation. At the same time, English is seen in some discourses as a threat to Latvian on the lexical, structural and functional levels.
