Linguistic variation and diversity in a dictionary of German confusables

  • German has pairs of competing words which are easily confused. These often share a root and are hence similar both in form and in the concepts they designate (e.g., autoritär/autoritativ 'authoritarian/authoritative'). These confusables or paronyms can be subject to semantic variation. The dictionary "Paronyme - Dynamisch im Kontrast" documents conventionalised patterns and use. It provides information on preferences and tendencies as observed in real communication, thereby also accounting for variation in use. Shifts are observed diachronically and also in terms of genre, discourse and register. This paper explores how confusables are used in different situations and how this variation unfolds in the reference guide. It demonstrates how differences in usage between technical language and everyday communication or between oral and written conversation are captured.
